News Lines - Electrifying Progress:- 1986 sees the completion of the Hastings and Cambridge electrification projects, further work towards Norwich in East Anglia, on the East Coast Main Line and in Ayrshire and commencement of the East Grinstead scheme. This featue shows work in progress an illustrates the workings current on these lines at the time.

Cab ride - The Settle and Carlisle, or rather Carlisle to Settle:- Recorded from the cab of 47 474 on 8th.January 1986, the view from the cab shows the celebrated line in winter with snow everywhere!. We pass D200, two 31s and a 25 and hear anecdotes from Driver George Parker and Inspector Ron Gerrard.

Archive Film - Ivo Peters' Someset & Dorset Railway:- Ivo Peters is as celebrated as the S & D itself and his 16mm colour film of the line in its heyday from 1959 to its demise brings it back to life after all these years after closure on 6th.March 1966. The pictures are enhanced by Peter Handford's fabulous sound recordings of locomotives hard at work on the S & D.

Newslines – Rolling Stones: BR’s stone traffic is a major revenue source and the advent of Class 59s, privately owned by Foster Yeoman, ensures its long-term survival. We feature the Class 59s, a Class 27 on Shap and workings at Peak Forest on the remains of the old Midland London – Manchester main line, including a Peak in the Peaks!

BBC Film on Mid-Hants: The BBC filming at Alresford and Medstead for their next S&D feature.

Cab Ride – Portsmouth to Cardiff: An interesting cross-country line, featuring parts of the Southern main lines at Southampton and Salisbury and the Western at Westbury, Bath and Bristol, as well as the Severn Tunnel in its centenary year.

Dutch Weekend: Railfilms, of Manchester, visited Holland to record some of the last workings of the ex-BR EM2 electrics.

Preservation – The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway: 1950s BR atmosphere on this famous Yorkshire branch in Bronte country. ‘Starring’ 4F, 8F, Ivatt, City of Wells, Bellerophon, Big Jim, etc!

Archive Film: Cam Camwell’s record of British Rail in 1951 and 1952. As secretary of the SLS, Cam was able to record some unusual workings, on on 16mm films. Steam replaces electrics at Lancaster (41900), 50655 on L&Y special, V of Rheidol, 41226 on pushpull special, 50865 (LMS livery), the last Dreadnought, 50455 at York and Manchester, B1s and D40s in Scotland and a ‘race’ near Boat of Garten. Y7 68089 on the North Sunderland line, Jubilee at Garsdale, D16s at Kings Lynn 0-4-4T on the Dornock branch and Belah and Deepdale Viaducts.

Steaming Around the World: South Africa Today – Ray Freeman’s film of the dwindling steam locomotive population in South Africa, in March and April 1986. Features 16CAs, 19Ds, 24s, s5s and the 26.

Newslines – Network South East: On 10th June 1986 Chris Green announced the most thorough overhaul of the much maligned commuter and South of England lines – we examine the first results.

Cab Ride – St. Pancras to Sheffield: Filmed from the cab of an HST, this shows a main line in transition. The famous ‘Leicester Gap’ was being reduced when we travelled the route on 25th May 1986 and the ‘old railway’ is seen clearly.

Ryderail & the Isle of Wight: On 21st June 1986 BR held an Open Day on the Isle of Wight. We feature events of the day at Ryde, Sandown and Haven Street and take a nostalgic look back at the Island Railways in 1953 and 1963 with fabulous archive footage from Cam Camwell and Edward Trotman.

Preservation – The Festiniog Railway: Not really preservation, as the Festiniog celebrates 150 years of continuous operation during 1986. We cover the line from Porthmadog to Blaenau Festiniog and look in at Boston Lodge on the way up.

Archive Film: ‘Cam’ Camwell’s record of BR in the 1950s continues with 1953 to 1955, covering Southern Steam (AIX and 0415s on Lyme Branch, Eastleigh depot. Three Bridges, T9s, E1s, etc). Western Steam (Dean Goods, a Star, Cambrian workings, etc) and the Mersey Rail 0-6-4T, North London 0-6-0Ts on the Cromford and High Peak, Compound on the Western, Director, etc.

Archive Film: Cam Camwell’s well-known 16mm film of BR in the 50s, featuring last day of the Welshpool and Llanfair, two Castles on the Severn Bridge and West Country branches, etc.

Preservation: The Severn Valley Revisited (Part One). A review of the southern half of this leader in preservation, featuring the Coal Tank, two Jubilees, the first Black 5, a Jinty on a goods, etc, from Kidderminster to Arley.

The Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway: Kevin Robertson gives an insight into this long-closed railway, illustrated by slides and the only known cine film.

Modern Archive: Railfreight in Cornwall. The South-West corner of Britain still has many fascinating railway features and we see freight (and passenger) on all the Cornish branches which remain.

Weekend in Ireland The Lough Gill Railtour - The RPSI’s celebrated three day tour over main lines on 9, 10, and 11th May 1987 featuring No 85 and No 171 - the latter looking like many pre-grouping British 4-4-0s.

Cam in Ireland Complimentary to the above, Cam Camwell’s Irish footage includes County Donegal narrow gauge in colour.

Preservation – The Bluebell Railway: At last, we cover the first large standard gauge preserved railway! Featuring ten pre-grouping locomotives and vintage rolling stock, this has one of the widest varieties of workings yet.

NewsSteam main line workings include Kolhapur at Buxton and on S&C, 4472 on S&C, at Sellafield and Manchester, 34092 on SSE, Mallard on SSE, 4498 at Selby, 5305 to Scotland, 5051’s last run, 7029 and 6000 at Swindon, Princess to Shrewsbury, 7819 and 75069 on the Cambrian. Cab Ride – Salisbury to Exeter: From the drivers viewpoint we travelled aboard 50050 Centurion (formerly Leviathon) over the ex LSWRs West of England main line. Despite ‘rationalisation’ by the Western Region, the line flourishes today and is full of interest.

Eastern Electrics: 86s and EMUs on the Norwich Main Line, over the new Trowse Bridge, at Elsenham, changing over at Cambridge, the electrification train on the Royston line and NSE at Peterborough.

BR Today – Lincolnshire and Humberside: Our ‘modern archive’ slot visits Syston Junction, Lincoln, Market Rasen, Barnetby, Scunthorpe, Brocklesby, New Holland and Littlefield to see 47s, 37s, 31s, 20s and DMUs in action against a background of semaphores and signal boxes.

Cambrian Steam: BR’s summer programme of steam along the Welsh Coast, featuring 7819 Hinton Manor, 75069 and 46443 bringing the Cambrian back to life. Scenes include Aberystwyth and V of R locomotives, Barmouth Bridge, Tywyn, Pwllheli and Machynlleth shed.

Welsh Narrow Gauge – The Snowdon Mountain Railway: Not ‘preserved’, but a real operating steam railway! Britain’s only rack railway climbs virtually to the top of the mountain, with 1895-built steam locos. We take you to the top after watching the works train depart and visit the shed at Llanberis.

North Norfolk Centenary: Celebrations at Weybourne on the North Norfolk Railway in June 1987, featuring J15 in GER blue livery on a goods train and the Brighton Belle.

K1 on the West Highland: Long lingering shots of the NELPG’s K1 No 2005 at work in the West Highlands amidst unparalled scenery.

Archive Film – Cam in Scotland 1957: By contrast, thirty years ago on the West Highland, with K1s and K2s, also Black 5s, Caley tanks, NB 4-4-2Ts around Crianlarich and at Spean Bridge and Connel Ferry – all in colour!
