We explore the railways of northern Belgium from the De Panne tramway (De Lijn) at Ostend to high speed rail at Antwerp and Brussels. The traditional routes have been joined by a new high speed line that links the capital, Brussels, with Paris, London and Cologne. Amsterdam will soon be brought into this net. We see the various TGV derivatives which work this prestige service and plenty of other NMBS passenger trains as well: AM96s Class 11s,12s, 13s. The venerable Cockerill Co Cos of class 51 are not forgotten, see them on the road and at B-Cargo's state of the art depot at Antwerp Nord. Freight is everywhere! We follow the main route to Gent and up to Antwerp and on to Roosendaal with a Benelux set. Back to Antwerp, where we take a trip to the docks hauling a pair of wagons loaded with German built combine harvesters bound for South America. Haulage courtesy of one of B-Cargo's new class 77 trip locomotives. On the quay we see paper from Austria being unloaded from OBB sliding wall vans in a rather novel way! Next we visit General Motors massive OPEL works. GM kindly let us film inside their factory and we also get a close up of Astra cars being loaded for export to Switzerland. The AM96 EMUs and their "sister" i11 hauled stock have brought new standards to passenger accommodation in Belgium; we have a look at them in action - inside and out! You can't visit northern Belgium and miss Brugge! We look at the sights and see what Bombardier are about to out shop from their local works!

We continue our Belgian tour southward to: Namur, Mons for the railfest, Charleroi-steel city-, Li?ge and then down into the Ardennes, where we see some of the forest being loaded to train for export. Trains and water always photograph well together, and there is plenty of opportunity to do this in southern Belgium as the countryside is criss-crossed by waterways, both natural and man made. We conclude our assignment by looking at the smallest rail network in the EU, that of Luxemburg. It may have less route miles to its name than Antwerp docks! but it's packed with interest and still runs some of the most interesting electric locomotives that can be found outside the eastern block! We explore the railways of eastern Belgium from Leuven (Louvain) and Zeebrugge across to the German border just west of Aachen. Really this is the story of two routes: the main freight to Germany via Hasselt, Visé and Montzen and the current main international passenger line via Liège. On the way we watch SNCB / NMBS at work and also follow the fortunes of B-Cargo in and around Genk. In Genk we drop in on a Scandivanian icon! IKEA who are committed rail freight users with regional distribution centres throughout continental Europe. We are privileged to tour their impressive facility, watch them unload rail vans from Sweden and Poland, and to discuss their plans for the future. Also in Genk is motor giant Ford with an impressive canal side port - see them both at work. From Genk we follow the line across the mighty Maas and watch the trains cross the river on the spectacular viaduct. We take aquick detour and visit Maastricht- a Dutch city integrated into the SNCB NMBS network. Liège is Belgium's third city and a very busy rail centre. Thalys, EuroCity, and IC trains in their coats of many colours enliven the city, and we have a close look at the route to Germany, for in a few years it will change forever!

The port of Antwerp is one of THE major sources of railfreight in Europe. Mile upon mile of rail-connected quays and busy container terminals. 185 freight trains a day! We examine the plans to increase capacity: at the port, the port approaches and on the route to Germany. Spend a day with an independent freight forwarder at Boom, help Mr Voss unload a rail van of Italian made Honda mopeds and load some Pringle crisps bound for Bayern, and follow the traffic all the way to Germany via the Maas bridge at Visé. We also follow the route to Luxembourg and watch the freight flows through the stunning Ardennes. At Charleroi we film a new breed of mini container terminal and see how it fits into the European "Quality net system" Visit the quays at Antwerp and Zeebrugge, take a ride on a container train and watch the stevedores at work. At Nord yard we film in the control room and on the hump to see how NMBS / SNCB process 3500 wagons a day. This film was made with the assistance of B-Cargo and will dismiss forever any notion that Belgium is boring! An absolute must for lovers of modern railfreight.

Stockholm is the capital and the largest city in Scandinavia, and is only "bettered" by St Petersburg in the whole of the Nordic region. A cosmopolitan city that contains a wealth of interest for the rail based tourist and enthusiast. Stockholm is the centre of the Swedish Railways (SJ) InterCity network worked by the fast and stylish X2000 tilting trains from ABB. Secondary InterCity trains and "Regionals" are worked by "ASEA" electric units that, some would say, pioneered modern power electronics for traction. You will also see "green freight" moved by these machines on its way to Finland. We even pop across the Baltic to Turku to see how the "Jiptrans" wagons have their bogies changed for onward movement over the broad gauge in Finland! Back in Stockholm we travel the "T-Bahn", the new light rail super tram- run by UK firm Connex and the Heritage tourist tram. Practical information is given, boat trips, places to visit, to eat and stay and so on. Naturally we also give some thoughts on coming and going- this gives us the excuse to try out the Arlanda Express between the airport and Stockholm Central! The Ruhr is Europe's largest industrial conurbation, it's also called the "50km stadt". We explore railways, light rail, and tramways from Duisburg in the west to Altenbeken in the east. You see ICE, IC, EC AND IR trains in this industrial environment, but also the Metropolitan - the business train that links the Niederrhein and the Ruhr with Hamburg -at speed and with style. In Duisburg we visit Europe's, perhaps the world's, largest inland port, spend time with some major players in European logistics and see how they are developing their rail business. Steel is unloaded from rail and onto north sea vessels for the trip to Boston -UK not US!- steel wire bound for deep-sea markets and containers destined for markets deep into Europe. At Essen we ride on a Dockland light rail vehicle! Dortmund is the Ruhr's major InterCity hub; see the ICs perform their intricate ritual of connections every day every hour whatever the weather!

Hamm is a great railway junction, the point where the Ruhr-Rhine orbital freight route starts. This double track electrified line carries huge volumes of freight clear of the dense network of passenger trains: "Beetles from VW, tanks on their way to exercise at Lüneburg and coal trains from Poland-freight paradise!

South of Altenbeken we visit the Bahn's least known Ausbaustrecke on the line to Kessel, in operation and nearly complete. We return via the Ruhr valley and suddenly you could be in the English Lake District! Finally, we couldn't help ourselves, we visit Wuppertal and have a ride on the 13km long Schwebebahn.

Filmed with the assistance of some of Europe's most professional transport and logistics companies including: Haeger und Schmidt, DeCeTe, Duisport Rail and naturally "Die Bahn".

Cologne is the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, it's also one of the busiest rail centres in Europe. Heavy rail, passenger and freight, one of the largest LRT systems in Germany -shared with freight at several points- and classic street trams.

The Hohenzollernbrücke is in the centre of it all, six tracks in constant use. To the south is the Südbrücke where freight trains pass every few minutes on their way to or from Gremberg yard. As a tourist you need to get to know the S-Bahn and we make the run to Bochum for a visit to the Eisenbahnmuseum at Dahlhausen.

Other visits made in the city include the chocolate museum- no dull lines of display cases this is very much a working museum!, 4711, Brühl, the tram museum and the city zoo! Each visit gives us the chance to try out the impressive public transport system.

For our long day out we take the train to Koblenz, a fine city and one of the best for watching the ceaseless activity of the two Rhine railroads. We take the Sesselbahn to the castle to get the best view of the railways in town! It's back to Cologne by KD Line steamer, great views of both rail banks, but we stop off at Königswinter to ride the Drachenfelsbahn for yet more stunning views. All this plus the run from Waterloo makes Out & About Cologne a must for rail based visitors to the city.

We concluded our Ruhr tour at Wuppertal and now pick up the story and head south- starting at Aachen.

Within the Netherlands we view the freight line in from Belgium.

Then on to Düren to view the work in progress on the NBS to Cologne. Around Düren we look at the brown coal trains of RHEINBRAUN on their 300km network. Krefeld has a superb tram system and we ride the fast tram to Düsseldorf, the business city of the Niederrhein. It's busy with rail activity 24/7! It has an interesting surface tramway and at Neuss, on the opposite side of the Rhine, a port.

We visit Cologne and look at the splendid Hbf and the two bridges that control rail traffic transiting this magnificent city, take a ride on the tramway to Bonn to see the Südbrücke. We visit Deutz and look at the implications of the new NBS. We follow the NBS south and see a new ICE3 unit on a test run. The two classic routes are not forgotten: we watch HGK at work around Bonn and see how the OAO shares track with the metro.

This is Bayer country- we view the chemical industry giant at work. From the heights of the Drachenfels we watch the spectacle of freight down both banks of the Rhine, and from Koblenz castle traffic at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel. Luck was on our side as south of Koblenz the ICE/EC/IC services to Frankfurt were being diverted down the right (freight) bank giving the opportunity to watch a stream of trains of all types transiting Rüdesheim! Back north we are the guests of P&O who have a new home at Logport, the 250 hectare site of a former steel works that is being transformed into a major "tri-modal" logistics hub. We get to grips with 21st Century transport and watch P&O unloading Nordwaggons of toilet tissue from Italy!

Koblenz to Cologne Cabride+ IC 614 starts her run north from Munich every day at the unearthly hour of 05.23. She will run to Stuttgart via Augsburg and Ulm. For the time being she will have to reverse at Stuttgart, Land Hauptstadt of Baden-Württemberg, and then take the NBS to Mannheim.

Her next call is the university city of Heidelburg, where she pauses briefly before swinging west to avoid Frankfurt. She calls at Mainz and would normally take the left bank IC line towards Koblenz. But today, because of engineering work on the line she is diverted across the Rhine to pick up the right bank line via Rüdesheim where we pick up the action watching IC trains scuttle along the promanade of this tiny Rhine-side town.

The main line is regained at Koblenz, we have a look at this great rail centre, and join the driver on the footplate for the run to Bonn and Cologne. It’s a busy route and we pass ICs, ECs, ICEs and freight-more freight in fact than you would expect! At Bonn we have a quick look around, and even cross to Bonn Beuel, before continuing north past the massive new container terminal, before weaving slowly into the massive Cologne Hbf.

This is more than just a cabride, it’s a mini documentary that really gives you the flavour of the route! Enjoy it now! This will be the last summer of ceaseless activity, for as of winter 2002 most fast trains will be taken over by ICE3 sets, and will run along the Rhein Main NBS, a faster but less scenic journey.. Filmed from: lineside, boat, and train - narrated by Phyllis Watts.

In TTR29-1 we travelled with IC 614 from Koblenz. We are now in Cologne and take a quick look at the city, its trams, the Südbrücke, the Hbf and the Messe on the Deutz side where the world's largest railway exhibition takes place.

Back at the Hbf with IC 614 we continue our run north by easing out and onto the famous Hohenzollernbrücke. Six tracks across the Rhine and 3,000 train movements a day! Through Deutz, a station awaiting a major change of fortune, and out of the city through the tangle of lines near Mülheim. It's a multi track 200kph line from here and lots of activity.

Our next stop is Düsseldorf-the business city of the Niederrhein, where we look at the impressive LRT system and the modern tramway from the vantage point of the telecom tower. North of Düsseldorf we pause at the recently completed InterCity airport station, part of which lies under the runway! It's another multi road race track towards Duisberg, and we race -and eventually get the better of an ICE heading for Berlin! A fascinating and VERY busy run.

Visit Cologne with us and see your favourites at "the world's largest model railway exhibition". All the big names are there: BREMO, Fleischmann, ROCO, Faller, Preiser, BUSCH and of course market leader Märklin and their Trix daughter company. ROCO have brought with them a spectacular new layout in HO based on the Mosel complete with a 4711 train! Märklin had layouts in HO AC "three rail", gauge 1 and the diminutive Z gauge. From the clubs we see the BLS HO layout from the local Köln group -large enough to be an exhibition on its own! running near scale length trains through spectacular mountain scenery. "Berlin" also in HO, a multi track representation of the capital's railways. Some fine layouts in gauge 1 and 2. from both clubs and manufacturers. We must not forget LGB- trains so large you felt you could ride in the cabs! Filmed during the exhibition itself and on the press day, a great reminder of the trip if you were there, and an inspiration if you were not!

Gothenburg is a great place to start our tour -it has the most complete tram system in Scandinavia. But our objective is the north and we travel there via Hallsberg, where the high speed line between Gothenburg and the capital is bisected by the great freight route between north and south, Örebro and Borlänge.

On the way we see the ASEA Rc family, X2000s, the new REGINA EMU and Norwegian interlopers!.

Nowadays there are over twenty private companies operating on the Swedish rail network and we get to see Svenska Tågkompaniet or TKAB, Tåg i Bergslagen or TiB and naturally Green Cargo the "private company" that now runs the former SJ freight business.

One of the most interesting stops is at the delightful little town of Mora where the main line meets the Inlandsbanan and freight is handed over for a ponderous journey north. Along the Baltic coast we visit Sundsvall, Umeå and eventually Luleå. The iron ore railway is explored from coast to coast and the latest super power is seen at work.

Then as a special treat for freight fans we travel to Haparanda to watch standard gauge wagons being prepared for their journey into Finland. A stunning railway filmed, mostly, in glorious weather!

Dortmund is quite an event: eight halls with the largest devoted to model railroads. Once again all the German majors were there and this time we concentrate on Fleischmann, TRIX and Faller. Dortmund is big enough to have a hall for the just for the clubs, and some exquisite models were on show:

Team Köln were there again, but this time with both banks of the Lötschberg! A stunning layout from Thüringen just oozed 1960s nostalgia, while the Hoeseltse Treinclub of Belgium brought along their Neubau-Schnellfahrstrecke!

From Austria came a complex representation of the OBB, and from Holland a US layout in N. There was even a delightful layout from Finland. Intermodellbau is more than just railways, and we have selected a few clips to show you from other halls: boats, fairgrounds and the Faller Car System.

A small but beautifully formed railway system that is probably the most de-regulated in continental Europe! The delightful, but uniform yellow and blue is giving way to a railway of many colours. "French style" electrics hauling InterCity coaches, double deck "Bison' and the remarkable Koplopers with the driver's cab above the coach level are all classics on this incredibly dense network. They are now joined by the new breed of open access operators who run freight trains with modern American class 66s or classic locomotives extinct elsewhere, like another US inspired machine- the class 1200.

We start our rail journey in the far south west at Vlissingen, a port with English connections, and make our way through Roosendaal to Dordrecht, one of the busiest multi use railway lines in Europe. International Thalys passenger trains, plus the older Benelux sets share the route with domestic InterCities, and freight bound for Germany, Belgium or France.

5,000 ton ore trains hauled by triplets of RAILION class 64s and venerable Belgian class 25s contrast with the new "Americans". We examine the railways in and around Rotterdam, including the modern metro system, and admire modern Dutch railway architecture at Schiedam and Zuid. We travel to Den Haag by tram from Delft to admire the classic HS station before continuing on to the remarkable new town of Zoetermeer.

We conclude at Utrecht with another international connection; the ICE3M that runs five times a day direct to Frankfurt. The film includes a cab-ride in a container crane at Europort, aerial footage of Kijfhoek, locomotive views from Shortlines.

Part two of our Dutch rail adventure starts at Geldermalsen on the OLD Betuwe line before heading east, crossing the Waal at Zaltbommel on a magnificent lattice bridge before arrival at Den Bosch where Thalys and Benelux trains are taking the long way round to Amsterdam! Tilburg, Boxtel and Best - freight trains pour through on their way to Venlo and Germany.

At Best we see modern Dutch railway architecture at its best and three 6400s at full power hauling 5000 tons of ore out of the underground station and up and over the canal on its way to the Saar. Eindhoven is an IC hub- we spend time in the "city of light" then continue east to Venlo where most freight trains change traction before travelling into Germany.

The ERS class 66s work straight through on their run to Speyer and we catch them on a night run to the border. South from Venlo to Roermond we pick up freight bound for Belgium, a Rail4Chem loco makes a pleasing sight heading south. Sittard is a junction station but of more interest is Born where DSM are loading melamine bound for Berlin. Maastricht is a great place to admire fine station architecture and Heerlen for the international shuttle to Aachen.

Finally to Simpleveld and the Miljoenenlijn of the Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij and their superb collection of steam locos and venerable coaches- a great day out!

Railfreight in the Netherlands is changing and changing fast! New operators now compete with the national incumbent Railion. The first open access company to run revenue earning freight was the Rotterdam based SHORT LINES and with TTR35-1 you have the opportunity to join it for a day's work hauling the oil tanker empties back from Switzerland.

For maximum flexibility SHORT LINES has leased two General Motors : Class 66 locomotives from Porterbrook hence the locos are simply known as PB's! Our journey starts on the Dutch border at Venlo when the HGK MAK locomotive hands over the train to its partner and the 66 can get underway. Without station calls to interrupt our progress it's amazing how quickly we cover the ground. Utrecht is reached in 90 minutes, not much more than would be required by an IC!

Along the way we have time to discuss the direction railfreight is taking in Holland, and of course point out the places of interest we pass. In addition to the narration by Phyllis Watts your SHORT LINES driver, Chris Westerduin, chats away happily in English to your cameraman to give another angle on the run. Filmed in glorious spring 2003 weather part two takes us through the National Railway Museum, the Amsterdam suburbs, Amsterdam CS and then down to the docks.

Our SHORT LINES journey to the harbour at Amsterdam continues! At Utrecht we take the freight only road around the east of the city past the National Railway Museum before regaining the main line towards Hilversum. North of Hilversum we are in the Amsterdam commuter area, and the 66 has to pick its way carefully through the traffic as we pass through the centre of Holland's largest city.

Near the Central Station we pass a couple of ICEs inbound from and outbound to Frankfurt, before we pause to pick up our shunter who will help us when we get down to the docks. West of CS work is in full swing on the modernisation of the approaches, it won't be that long before this is part of the High Speed Line to Brussels and Paris and - perhaps- to the UK!

Down at the docks Railion are preparing to depart with a massive coal train for the Ruhr, but we still have a little way go, as we must reverse through the harbour complex to reach the petroleum quays. We seem to have attracted the attention of Dutch enthusiasts as we are greeted by a positive gang of photographers. Our driver Chris Westerduin rewards them by pausing for a photocall in front of nice bed of daffodils thoughtfully planted by the port authority!

Railfreight in the Netherlands is changing- and changing fast! But the importance of the network of rail connected ports remains pivotal to the success of this and indeed all transport modes. We tour the major ports starting at Terneuzen - an enclave of RAILION which is linked with the NMBS I SNCB network rather than the NS - then, on to the sister port of Vlissingen to watch the new Ford traffic arriving from Germany and Genk.

Before we get to the big one - Rotterdam - we spend some time at the Netherland's largest marshalling yard at Kijfhoek. We watch wagons going over the hump, visit the control room, and watch wagons being chased into their allocated slots by teams of mechanical mules! We follow a local trip working across the Maas to Vlaardingen to see a delivery of raw materials for the food industry, and a local oil delivery being undertaken.

Rotterdam is Europe's largest container port and is served by two terminals: the Rail Service Centre which serves the older Waalhaven, while Europort Delta serves the Maasvlakte quays- where the true giants of the ocean berth. We visit both terminals; exploring both shipside and railside. We also explore the port line and its railfreight customers, and look at the modernisation that is currently underway as part of the Betuweroute programme.

This film has been made with the extensive and active co-operation of RAILION, NS infrastructure, SHORTLINES, ACTS, European Rail Shuffle (ERS), Europe Container Terminals (ECT), the Port of Rotterdam, the RSC Rotterdam and many others. Part two of this series continues with the Maasvlakte iron ore terminal before heading towards Germany to watch the port shuffles and see the Bentheimer Eisenbahn at work. The programme is comprehensively narrated with animation sequences courtesy of Transpoint.

Antwerp is Europe's third largest port but the most important for railfreight. As important in fact for the German economy as for that of Belgium. Line 34 was actually built by the Germans to give easy access to the north sea! Now it's as busy as ever and we chart the route from Antwerp to Aachen.

At Antwerp we spend some time looking at the freight which travels the line; bananas from the National Fruit Quay bound for Germany, paper inbound from Austria, then see how B-Cargo process it and dispatch it through the busy section from Nord to Berchem.

We follow the mixed use railway through Aarschot and Diest to Hasselt and then to Glons where line 34 becomes line 24! Impressive civil engineering follows: across the Albert canal and the Meuse at Visé. Before you know it you're at Montzen yard and we start the run over the non-electrified section to the German border.

Along this section you will find a huge variety of diesel traction both from the SNCB NMBS and from the DB. The Montzen viaduct is spectacular - the second longest in Belgium - and we watch trains spanning the years as well as the valley!

The Gemmenicher tunnel is quite plain on the Belgian side but highly decorated on the German portal! Watch the heavy freights being banked up the incline in a variety of combinations! Then it's Aachen and we view all the action from 212s to the latest traction from the SBB, Rail4Chem and DB Cargo.

Belgium's most scenic railway? Well we think so! This film charts the line from north to south beginning at Liège and ending not in Belgium at all but in Luxembourg. It is the line's raison d'etre to link the capital of French speaking Belgium with the Grand Duchy.

The film charts the line both historically - most of the footage was taken during the late 1990s when the line was non electrified - as well as geographically. Rivage is the starting point for line 42 and we view the former motive power shop before hitching up to a heavy mineral train for the journey south through the limestone gorge cut by the beautiful river Amblève.

We criss cross the river as we head for Aywaille, in time for the Saturday morning market, Stoumont and Trois - Ponts where the remains of the former line to Spa via Stavelot can be seen, as well as the twisty tourist line the Vennbahn.

We head further south in close company with the N68 to Vielsalm, a crossing point on this mostly single track route and where much of the Ardennes timber is loaded to rail. We journey through time here to see the railway under the wire and see how a modern B-Cargo loads the timber. Luxembourg is entered just south of Gouvy but we continue south for a quick look at the capital of the Grand Duchy. Also included: a steam day out with an ex PKP Kriegs Loc and a look at the electric railway being built on top of the classic line.

The capital city of Finland has an appeal quite different from its Scandinavian neighbours. There is plenty to see and do, and Ticket to Ride.. helps you sort out some of the best, and of course, gets you using the city's superb public transport system to make the most of your time and your euros. Once we get down town from Vantaa airport we look over some of the city's hotels, where you get good access to the surprisingly dense tram system. We use the trams to see the sights, but for those more distant attractions we take to the train.

The centre of the VR passenger network is the magnificent neo-classical Central station. We have a good look around, admire the new roof built to mark the city's year as capital of European culture and see how connections with the metro are made.

We make a day trip to the city of Turku, the ancient capital of Finland, stopping off at KarjalKaris and diverting to Hanko on the way. This gives us the opportunity to see VR at work: Pendolinos, the Soviet SRi and state of the art SR2 - broad gauge Lok 2000s - plus double deck IC cars and the latest in suburban rail travel from Fiat.

We also make an excursion across 40 miles of the Baltic to the Estonian capital Tallinn by ferry, with a return onboard a high tech catamaran. Extras include a ferry hopping tour of the Turku archipelago, a boat trip to the fortress at Suomenlinna and a visit to the Helsinki tram museum. For rail fans, there is a visit to Kouvola where we watch VR Cargo switching European and Russian wagons near the ports of Kotka and Hamina.
