Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, has been called the land of the Garratts for this type of motive power dominated the main line steam scene for many years and some examples were still at work in the late 1990s.

Beginning at Bulawayo in 1975, Garratts and a 12th. class are seen on station pilot duties. Moving out onto the main line to Gwelo, types 14A, 15 and 16A are seen as well as a South African GMA on hire.

The West Nicholson branch is next visited with 14As working goods and mixed trains through rolling bush and through more rugged scenery. The section concludes with pacing shots of a 15A + 16A combination.

The final section covers the Victoria Falls line, firstly around Wankie with 15ths and 20ths passing through fine scenery and then to Victoria Falls. Not forgotten is the Wankie Colliery system with its green 4-8-2s.

The archive film is sourced from 8mm colour cine film and mastered on professional equipment. An authentic soundtrack has been added along with an informative commentary.

Kenya could still muster and interesting array of steam power in 1977 and this volume features a visit made by Jim Bowller during that year.

The tour began in Nairobi with visits to the steam depot and the works where we witness such sights as a Class 60 Garratt just out of the paint shop as well as other types in the process of heavy overhaul.

A visit by rail to Butere comes next where the last remaining steam hauled passenger train in Kenya was sampled between Kisumu and Butere. Then Classes 29, 31 and 60 are seen on the steeply graded main line out of Nairobi into the Rift Valley.

Moving eastwards to Mombasa, another Class 60 Garratt takes a mixed train from Taveta to Voi.

We conclude with some splendid sequences of Class 59 Garratts at work on the main line.
