The Cambrian Line, North Wales, Wirral, Fylde and Cumbrian Coast.

Having covered Scotland in Volume 1 and the Southern Region in Volumes 2, 3 and 6, (Volume 5 concentrates on Manchester and the North East), this programme covers the west side of the country. Locations and depots visited are Banbury, Saltley and the Cambrian line. This is seen on a Summer Saturday in 1966 with double headed Standards on holiday trains, a busy Machynlleth shed and station and a journey to Pwlleli double headed behind 75052 and 46251. The engines are then serviced at Pwlleli shed. Talerddig is tackled behind steam on the return journey. North Wales is covered with a visit to Holyhead depot followed by a journey to LLandudno Junction, Chester and Croes Newydd- where the last operational B.R. pannier Tanks are filmed.

The Liverpool area sees the following locations and depots. Birkenhead, Edge Hill, Speke Junction, Bank Hall, Aintree and Heaton Mersey finishing at Stockport. The journey to Preston is behind a Black 5 out of Liverpool Exchange. An interval is spent at Preston observing everything from Big 8s to Britannias passing through. Its then steam to Blackpool and Poulton-Le-Fylde before a Black 5 takes our train, a diverted relief 'Royal Scot' via Lostock Hall over the Settle and Carlisle. A detour is made to visit Rose Grove shed and observe the Copy Pit banker.

Carnforth bustles with steam hauled freights, so a session here, when all four platforms were in use is well spent. Two Jubilees head out on the Leeds line. The Cumbrian Coast could rival that of the WCML with regards it's interesting steam workings and this is shown with a visit to Barrow in Furness, Whitehaven and Workington. Its then up the main line to Carlisle but not before a stop-over at Tebay and Shap Summit to see those freights being banked northward.

The final section returns the traveller down the WCML towards Crewe and Stoke-On-Trent, but the final leg is made behind steam from Preston to Manchester Victoria with a visit to Bolton shed.

Most classes in use during 1966 to 1968 are seen including many Jintys, Ivatt Class 2 and 4

2-6-0s, Pannier Tanks, 4F, Jubilees, WD and Fairburn Class 4 2-6-4Ts among others.

Whilst many railway enthusiasts will have had regional preferences, those following the end of steam would have travelled the length and breadth of the country in search of the remaining pockets of activity. This volume covers many of them.

Starting at Aller Junction we next visit Newton Abbot, Dainton bank, then on to Plymouth North Road before returning to Newton Abbot, the Exe Valley line, Tiverton Junction with Tiverton and Hemyock services, Reading General, Paddington, High Wycombe, Banbury, Gloucester Central and Worcester Shrub Hill.

On now to the Midland Region with "City of Manchester" on the Royal Train and activity at Rugby Midland before returning to the Western for a brief visit to Shrewsbury and the Birkenhead route.

Moving north we drop in at Oxenholme for the 'Grayrigg banker' and Black 5 arriving from Windermere.

Some time is spent in and around the Tebay area. Starting south of Tebay and with a mixture of monochrome and colour footage, the constant procession of steam hauled passenger and freight services along with the attachment of banking locomotives and those working towards Shap Summit with and without assistance are filmed from a number of locations including Dillicar water troughs and Scout Green.

An 8F plods across Ribblehead viaduct before the shed at Carlisle Kingmoor is 'bashed'.

Up to the Scottish Region where a Britannia arrives at Dunblane along with some freight movements in that area and Thornton Junction.

On the subject of freight, Gateshead provides a variety of motive power in a typically grimy atmospheric 1960s location. We drop in at Durham and Darlington before some time is spent observing the variety of trains into and out of the Scarborough area.

The maze of tracks around Leeds Holbeck, Whitehall and Geldard Junctions see freight and passenger followed by a host of services at Heaton Lodge Junction, west of Mirfield along with a brief visit to Standedge tunnel.

A short three-minute section finishes the programme showing a few of the enthusiast's specials that ran towards the end of steam.

A good representation of all the classes at work during this period are covered.

An informative but unobtrusive narration describes the scenes all of which have been digitally enhanced for exposure, sharpness and colour correction. Soundtracks have been added as accurately as possible using suitable classes of loco where available.
