In 1995 a new railway was opened in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of Northern China. Remarkably, the line was designed to use steam operation and as the 21st Century dawned this type of motive power was still in daily use along the full length of this 943 km. route.

This programme covers operations over the spectacular Jingpeng Pass which the line ulilises to cross a mountain range approximately halfway along the route. Spectacular civil engineering features abound along this 48 km section, including .fme horseshoe curves, seven tunnels and numerous viaducts. QJ class 2-10-2s, mostly double headed, toil though a mountainous landscape on this, probably the last, remaining long-distance steam operation in the World. The sequences were taken in early 2000 when freezing temperatures ensured spectacular smoke effects!
