By the mid 1970s the diesel and electric motive power fleet had been renumbered, with TOPS taking over, with the familiar Class categories. However, the fleet itself remained as varied as ever, with everything from ‘Westerns’ to ‘Deltics’ on main line services. A very interesting volume featuring a collection of rare footage from the '50s & '60s and including one-off prototypes 'Falcon', DP2 & the gas turbine 4-6-0 GT3.


The late 1950s & early 1960s saw the largest influx of new designs as the British Railways Board hurried to rid themselves of steam traction. During this period a huge number of locomotives were built, some just one-off prototypes, others part of large classes.


Thankfully some far sighted individuals filmed the new diesels as well as the even newer electrics. Diesel shunters were the unsung heroes of the traction fleet. Several classes, some large, some very small, toiled away in yards throughout the network. Some types were built in large numbers, like the 350 horsepower 08s. Others were grouped into smaller classes, like the 06s, which had short working lives. Others performed a wider variety of roles, working trip freight as well as heavier shunting duties. In this programme we explore this fleet in action, using a collection of archive film and contemporary footage.


In this volume we include:

  • A history of the diesel shunter fleet starting in the 1930s.
  • Class 02 - an 0-4-0 design introduced in 1960.
  • Class 03 - an 0-6-0 diesel mechanical design, following the introduction of the class, with film from their early years around the network including East Anglia, the Cromford & High Peak and the Weymouth Tramway plus examples in preservation and in Industrial service.

  • Class 14 - the short lived ‘Teddy Bears’ built at Swindon in BR service and in the preservation era.

The years after the end of steam traction are particularly fascinating. Corporate blue was now dominant & starting with some electric locomotive classes in November 1971, the entire traction fleet was renumbered; a process which took four years to complete. Then came another change in appearance, when the practice of displaying headcodes on diesel & electric locomotives was ended. In this programme we’ll explore the network in the early 1970s & this period of transition for the motive power fleet.
