One of only three of the ‘Schools’ class to survive into preservation, 925 was overhauled by volunteers of the Mid-Hants at Eastleigh railway works where it was construction in 1934. After just under 30 years service with the Southern and BR, Cheltenham was withdrawn in 1962 and set to one side for the national collection. Following storage at various locations, including at York’s NRM, No. 925 was put into temporary working order for exhibition at Rainhill for the Rocket 150 celebrations in 1980. After a short period at Dinting, the locomotive was stored at York until 2010 when it was agreed for the Mid-Hants Railway to take over the locomotive and overhaul it to full working order again. Footage of the locomotive in the works at Eastleigh, its first steamings there and its departure by road transport for the York Railfest. This is the story of Cheltenham’s overhaul at Eastleigh and re-introduction to service.

The launch of Lord Nelson at Eastleigh in May 2006 was the culmination of ten years overhaul by the members of the Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society. It was one of the most extensive overhauls ever taken on in railway preservation which tested the engineers to the limit. What was thought to be a usual overhaul, turned out to be far bigger due to the condition of the boiler on No. 850.

This programme tells the story of Lord Nelson from its design and construction in 1926 through to its operational years in BR service and eventual withdrawal in 1962.

Footage of its first preservation period in service in the 1980s is accompanied by recollections of firing a Nelson by Eastleigh fireman and driver Rodney Tizzard. We hear from the team overhauling No. 850 at Eastleigh in the more recent overhaul and see how the problems with the firebox and boiler were tackled at Roger Pridham’s engineering in Devon. Unique footage of the boiler and chassis overhaul is included which lead up to the final assembly inside Eastleigh Works in 2006. The re-dedication of Lord Nelson by HRH The Princess Royal on 6th May 2006 is fully covered when the locomotive emerged from the Works into the yard in steam.

The remaining section of the programme is devoted to the main line tours it undertook in 2007 and its brief spells at the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway and Great Central Railway before departing for the Mid-Hants line. Altogether a complete story of this ‘pride of the Southern Railway’

Arguably Britain’s most famous locomotive, A4 Pacific , No. 4468 Mallard is the prized locomotive within the National Railway Museum’s collection at York.

On 3 July 1938, Sir Nigel Gresley’s A4 Pacific Mallard set a world speed record for steam traction of 126 miles per hour. This is a record that has never been bettered!

This dvd is a tribute to this magnificent locomotive and to those who restored her to working order again in the mid-1980s in order that the 50th anniversary of that momentous record run could be celebrated.

Many of the runs of Mallard from 1985 to 1988 are featured together with a line-up of three of the class at the National Railway Museum on 27 August 1988.

We start the programme with Mallard’s West Country Railtour in March 1963. At Tiverton Junction, Westbury, Bristol, Temple Meads, Swindon, Melksham and on the Honiton incline.

The first steaming at the National Railway Museum – ‘unclothed’! Saunderton Bank, Fenny Compton and north of Derby.

There are only three preserved examples of the famous Great Western ‘King’ or ‘6000 Class’ locomotives and 6024 "King Edward I" is one of the only two working examples.

No.6024 King Edward I is the subject of this updated dvd of its preserved life.

Sold for scrap in 1962, the locomotive went to the scrapyard at Barry, South Wales owned by Woodham Brothers. 6024 languished there for eleven years until purchased by the 6024 Preservation Society Ltd in 1973.

For the next fifteen years the society restored the locomotive back to its main line working condition at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre after which it made its re-entry to the main line steam special market.

At Quainton Road, 6024 is seen on home ground at the Buckingham Railway Centre, and in the cab, as the engine is run-in after restoration.

On test and first main line tours, on test at Litchurch Lane, Lapworth and Banbury. Then a triumphant return to the main line at Tysley.

The Welsh Borders, a favourite route of the Kings, it was the only GW engine to work on the main line in the summer of 1990.

Footage of locomotive preparation at the Didcot Railway Centre and subsequent departures.

Steam out of London & Gloucester, a round-up of the other main line routes the King worked over during a memorable period on the main line.

We see it in action in the late 1980s and 1990s with its first main line ‘ticket’, followed by sequences up to 2002 after its second overhaul period which brought King Edward 1 back to the network in 1997.

The last remaining Southern Railway ‘King Arthur’ Class No. 30777, ‘The Last Knight’ Sir Lamiel is now some eighty years old and proudly a part of the National Collection.

Sir Lamiel, a Southern Railway 4-6-0 Class N15. This Maunsell design was developed from an earlier design built for the London & South Western Railway. The brief was to design a locomotive capable of maintaining 55mph with 500 ton trains travelling the challenging West of England Main Line.

Maunsell developed the 4-6-0s introduced by Urie successfully and initially took ten Drummon Class G14 locomotives, already authorised for rebuilding, for his task. Hence the King Arthur Class emerged and out of the many more locomotives eventually built, only Sir Lamiel was to survive the cutters’ torch.

After thirty-six years operating over the Southern Region of British Railways and the former Southern Railway, No. 30777 was set aside for preservation by the British Transport Commission. Initially stored at Fratton Deport near Portsmouth, Sir Lamiel eventually found itself within the reserve collection area of the National Railway Museum at York.

In the late 1970s, assistance came along in the form of the Humberside Locomotive Group based at Hull. 30777 was sent to Hull soon afterwards for restoration by their team and in February 1982 emerged in steam again, the first time for twenty-one years.

Since then Sir Lamiel has graced the main line again, travelling to many parts of the national system including its old stamping ground of the Salisbury to Exeter line. This dvd traces the history of its preserved status and narration covers in detail its very beginnings in Southern days.

We see Sir Lamiel crossing a snow covered Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

Scarborough Spa Express: On this occasion in 1985, Sir Lamiel substituted for ‘Green Arrow’.

Steam Specials out of Marylebone: In the late 1980s Sir Lamiel was a regular performer on these runs and we see 777 at the servicing dock alongside the diesel depot at Marylebone – now sadly just a memory as these facilities were later demolished.

Derby Test Trains: After a heavy boiler overhaul, Sir Lamiel successfully passed her main line test and wes soon to be seen on a run over the S&C, with the FSS Pullman Rake. After a two month stay at Carnforth, 777 Sir Lamiel worked a southbound Cumbrian Mountain Express in May 1987.

North Wales Coast: 1991 saw Sir Lamiel taking the distinctive Southern Green to the North Wales Coast as Sir Lamiel heads for Holyhead.

Intercity Sponsored Steam: Sir Lamiel was back in action on home ground in 1992 – with runs over the West of England main line between Andover and Exeter, we see her taking water at Yeovil Junction.

D-Day Workings: Commemorative round trips between Salisbury and Southampton were shared with the preserved S-15, No.828.

1994: Saw Sir Lamiel in new livery leaving Waterloo for Yeovil with an evocative shot of 777 leaving Yeovil Junction after nightfall.

In 2006, Sir Lamiel re-entered the main line business again for the third time following a long overhaul at its new base of the Great Central Railway.

We cover its overhaul and the first few main line tours from York in the summer of 2006.

A special edition Locomotive Profile to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death and funeral of Sir Winston Churchill. The Bulleid light Pacific No. 34051 named Winston Churchill was central to the final arrangements for the funeral. Especially prepared ready for the day in January 1965, the locomotive was eventually saved as part of the National Collection and has been cosmetically restored by a team at the Mid-Hants Railway for display at York.

This DVD tells the story of the locomotive and includes an interview with the remaining crew member on the day, fireman Jim Lester, who recalls the speedy preparations put into place following Sir Winston’s death and how he was chosen to be on the footplate on that momemtous day. Jim recalls the actual journey to Hanborough, Oxfordshire (closest station to Bladon, the Spencer-Churchall family church) from Waterloo and details after arrival. Original film of 34051 on the funeral train plus its wanderings during preservation following withdrawal from Salisbury shed in 1965. An extensive interview with Jim Lester explaining the start of his career on the footplate is included as an additional section.

We delve into the restoration of the locomotive at Ropley and view all its stages of painting and replacement of parts. Transport to York and unveiling on 25th January 2015 is the culmination of the project. Ian Harrison, chairman of the Southern Branch of the Friends of the National Railway Museum, explains how the restoration and fund-raising was accomplished.

The story of ‘Battle of Britain’ Class Pacific No. 34067 is a remarkable one.


One of forty-four ‘Battle of Britain’ Bulleid Pacifics in the 110-strong light pacific class designed in the 1940s by O.V.S. Bulleid, "Tangmere" emerged from Brighton Works in September 1947 and was first sent to Ramsgate shed for duties in the South East. Two years later the locomotive went to Stewarts Lane where it remained for the next twelve years, finally finishing its days at Salisbury shed in November 1963.


Having been left for dead at Woodham’s scrapyard at Barry following its withdrawal in 1963, after 18-years "Tangmere" was rescued from the ‘graveyard of steam’ in January 1981 and initially taken to the Mid-Hants Railway for restoration.


The locomotive was then transferred to the old railway works at Swindon where a great deal more restoration took place. To speed up the restoration to main line condition, No. 34067 was moved again to the workshops of Riley & Co at Bury where a huge amount of work took place making it one of the most complex and expensive restorations of a Barry locomotive to date.


Finally, in 2003, Tangmere emerged from the works resplendent in its BR green with nameplates and shield attached. There then followed a series of test trains on the East Lancs Railway where the locomotive was put through its paces before leaving via the main line link at Castleton for its test run on Net­work Rail. With light test runs and a loaded test run completed, Tangmere began its new career on the main line and made its way south to its new base at the Old Oak Common depot in west London.


We see many of its first passenger turns out of London Victoria which took it to various south eastern coastal locations. The British Pullman hired Tangmere on many occasions – we see it with the Pullman coaches at various points.


The locomotive was also hired to take a series of trains to and from Penzance, the first time that an original Bulleid Pacific had been into Cornwall since 1964.


We end with the now-closed Folkestone branch and see Tangmere tackle the 1 in 31 climb.

Here wecover the tours by Bulleid ‘Battle of Britain’ Class Pacific No. 34067 Tangmere since the beginning of 2004.

Since its restoration to main line condition in 2002-2003 Tangmere has accomplished a considerable railtour programme with various operating companies.

Its star role in the British Pullman train service out of London’s Victoria station has seen the locomotive haul up to 600-ton trains of Pullman stock to various parts of the South.

Few steam locomotives have a history to match Princess Margaret Rose, the first production Pacific for the LMS Railway. When the locomotive was withdrawn from British Railway’s operating stock in the early 1960s, she was purchased by Sir Billy Butlin as a showpiece for his Pwllheli holiday camp and appeared destined to be a childrens’ plaything!


However a group of enthusiasts bought her and took her to Butterley in Derbyshire, where they loving restored her to full operating condition once again. Today she gives pleasure to thousands, working on British Rail main lines, as in the past.

One of thirty-eight Coronation Class 4-6-2s built in Crewe by the LMS under the design of Sir William Stanier. Duchess of Hamilton is very much part of the National Collection now and was brought back into main line use in the 1980s.

Here we look at her main line runs starting with her test runs in 1990 following her second major overhaul promoted by The Friends of the National Railway Museum.

Featured here are 46229’s runs over the Settle-Carlisle Railway, those over the North Wales route to Holyhead, to Scarborough and into the south of England from Paddington.

Our new programme about the recently overhauled A3 Pacific which was re-launched in January 2016.

Following its £4.2 million pound rebuild, No. 60103 has graced the main line again after more than 10 years. Flying Scotsman is still considered to be the most famous locomotive in the world and recent publicity has brought the general public’s interest to the forefront. Rare Pathe News film of the locomotive at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1925; aerial sequences in the 1920s; Kings Cross in January 1963 as Alan Pegler takes ownership; film of the 40th anniversary run in 1968; preparations for export to the USA in 1969. We also feature archive of the locomotive in BR times and follows its fortunes and misfortunes since purchase by Alan Pegler in 1963. The LNER’s last Chief Mechanical Engineer was Arthur Peppercorn, whose most lasting memorial is the subject of this programme – his Class A2 Pacific No. 60532 Blue Peter.

The locomotive was saved from scrapping in 1966 by Geoffrey Drury. After a chequered preservation career, he decided to put the locomotive in the capable hands of the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG). They restored her to main line condition at the Thornaby depot.

This programme covers her return to the main line and her first runs over the scenic Settle-Carlisle and a foray back on her native metals in Scotland as well as use on the Great Central Railway.

Sadly tragedy follows as she is virtually destroyed whilst on a main line run at Durham and due to the damage caused in that incident in 1994, Blue Peter had to return to the Thornaby workshops. On completion of the repairs in 1996, No. 60532 returned to service on her ‘home’ ground on the North York Moors Railway and then to the main line again.

This dvd graphically captures the incident in all its dreadful detail, through rare footage from the train itself. We than follow her second restoration in the shed at Thornaby, were the full extent of the damage is revealed.

This programmes is a tribute to a superb locomotive and the dedication of the members of the NELPEG, who have had to overcome more traumas and set backs than seems just. That they have done so and triumphed is testament to their enthusiasm and dedication and the work carried out to bring the locomotive back into service. We see her at work on the ‘Moors’ and in the last months of her boiler ticket in 2001.

Here we tell the story of one of Britain’s most impressive main line entertainers – Gresley ‘V2’ No. 60800 "Green Arrow".

One of Gresley’s three-cylinder V2 2-6-2s design first appeared in 1936 and was destined for heavy mixed traffic work throughout the London & North Eastern Railway system. The V2s achieved initial fame in working the Scottish goods from London’s Kings Cross.

Green Arrow was selected for preservation in the National Collection and has been lovingly cared for ever since.

We see it during its reign on the main line in the 1980s and 1990s in both LNER green and latterly in BR green livery, which it carried after 1997.

The very last Pacific locomotive to be built in Britain, Duke of Gloucester is literally a one-off locomotive.

Constructed at Crewe Works in 1954, No.71000 Duke of Gloucester was the last Pacific locomotive built for the nationalised British Railways, the sole Standard Class 8P, the engine was the prototype of a three-cylinder development of Britannia.

This locomotive profile dvd traces its beginnings and its short career of just eight years on the West Coast Main Line for BR. But our story really starts with its incredible survival in South Wales, at the famous scrapyard at Barry. Devoid of many of its main components, the Duke is seen at its darkest moment, rusting away by the seaside.

By 1974 help was on the horizon in the form of The 71000 Duke of Gloucester Locomotive Trust who managed to purchase the engine and see it transferred to the fledgling Great Central Railway scheme. We see footage of this rescue and of the early years of restoration at Loughborough.

Extensive sequences of its return to steam are included, with an in depth review of its first main line runs all over the UK.

The programme picks up the story in the early 21st century at Bury on the East Lancs Railway where the Duke was undergoing a huge overhaul for its second term out on the main lines. Sequences of its first move under steam and of its very first running on the Lancashire line begin to trace the start of the new main line ticket.

The locomotive’s first run to Holyhead is covered, as too is the triumphant run over Shap and the Settle-Carlisle in September 2004.

This dvd is the story of one of Britain’s most impressive class of locomotives – the LMS Black Fives.

Designed by Sir William Stanier, Class 5 4-6-0 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway was numerically the largest class of locomotive in Great Britain and they were always known as ‘Black 5s’. 842 of these Class 5 4-6-0s were constructed and were truly ‘maids of all work’, handling anything from local freight trains to named expresses and everything inbetween. Many of the class have survived into preservation, a good number being bought from British Rail when they dispensed with steam in 1968.

We follow the story of nine of the Black Fives as they became runners again in preservation all over the UK. This programme starts with LMS No. 5025, the oldest Black Five to survive, as it operates in the Scottish Highlands on the Strathspey Railway.

We travel south to see the National Railway Museum’s example, No. 5000, at work on the Severn Valley Railway.

No. 5305 was saved by the scrap merchant in Hull who received it in his yard for cutting up. We see it working in the Scottish Highlands on the Fort William route.

The unique Stephenson’s link motion Class 5 No. 45428 with No. 44767 are seen at work on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The Midland Railway Centre’s No. 44932 and No. 44871 based at the Bo’ness, are seen on the Mallaig route in the late 1980s.

60007 Sir Nigel Gresley (A4 Pacific) last ran in BR service in the mid 1960s after which it was purchased for preservation by the A4 Locomotive Society.It was unusually, overhauled and restored to LNER garter blue livery as No. 4498 at the former LMS Crewe works in 1967, which still had steam expertise available. It then returned to BR tracks to haul enthusiast’s specials, something which it has been renowned for ever since.

Sir Nigel Gresley has always had a special place in the hearts on LNER fans after being named after that railway’s Chief Mechanical Engineer at Marylebone station on 26th November 1937. The locomotive had a short spell away from main line duties between 1968 and 1972 when BR’s infamous steam ban was in force. Later its forays from Carlisle tended to be associated with the Settle and Carlisle line. We see Sir Nigel Gresley at work on the main line duties, as well as performing on some of our most prestigious preserved lines.

Also in this dvd we feature the locomotive in 1988 lined up for a photographic call alongside Mallard and Bittern as Silver Link, to mark its sister locomotive ‘Mallards’ 50th anniversary.

The dvd is about one locomotive – 35028 ‘Clan Line’, a member of the Oliver Bulleid’s ‘Merchant Navy’ Class for the Southern Railway. This locomotive is one of the best known on the modern-day steam locomotive scene, having worked since 1974 on most of the British Rail steam main lines.

The programme has been made with full approval and co-operation of the locomotive’s owners, The Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society Limted and is a tribute to their skills and efforts at presenting this magnificent manchine for the joy of the British public.

Currently the only working example of the ‘Princess Royal’ Class, No. 6201 Princess Elizabeth is one of our earlier examples saved by pioneers in preservation.

This dvd traces the locomotive’s preserved life from the time it was bought by the Princess Elizabeth Locomotive Society from Carlisle shed in 1962. From its days at the Ashchurch site in Gloucestershire, this magnificent Pacific has graced the main lines of Britain since the mid-1970s.

In 2002 it re-entered service again following an extensive overhaul at Tyesley and Bury; views from this period are included along with the locomotive’s trials prior to its main line comeback in April 2002.

Footage of the first runs over the Settle-Carlisle Railway and its triumphant conquering of Shap begin a spell of sequences of the locomotive at work again.

Most people think of the famous Express Steam Locomotives, such as ‘Flying Scotsman’, ‘Princess Elizabeth’, ‘Mallard’ and so on when asked to describe a steam engine. However, the true backbone of the steam railwy age was the conveyance of goods traffic, for which special locomotives were required – known as freight engines.

Perhaps most special of all were the Somerset and Dorset Class 7F 2-8-0s, the subject of this dvd. Their working lives were spent entirely on the famous Somerset and Dorset Railway and such was their charisma, that two examples, 53808 and 53809, have been saved for posterity.

This dvd shows the class at work in the 1960s by means of Ivo Peters incomparable 16mm cine film and features the preserved locomotives at work.

This video is about one of Sir Nigel Gresley’s famous Bugatti inspired A4 Pacific, No. 60009 Union of South Africa.

As works No. 1853 the engine emerged from Doncaster Works in June 1937 and until withdrawal on 1 June 1965 amassed the highest mileage total of the class.

Following withdrawal, ‘No.9’ was purchased by John Cameron, the Chairman of Scotrail. The graceful Pacific has now worked over most of the recognised British main line steam routes, however it is when on familiar territory in her native Scotland that the engine acquires an additional magic.

We feature Union of South Africa starting with its triumphant return to Kings Cross in 1994 for its first departure from there for over thirty years. With the ‘Elizabethan’ and a ECML special to Peterborough.

Then goes back to its days of overhaul at the Severn Valley Railway, on test at Derby and a triumphant return to Edinburgh Waverley for its star turn at the Forth Railway Bridge Centenary celebrations in 1990.

Approaching Peterborough and thirty years before her return to London, No.9 heads the last A4 working from King’s Cross.

In Scotland we see the A4 working north of Glasgow in the 1960s.

Edinburgh to Aberdeen and back, then over the S&C to haul a North Wales Coast Express and back via the S&C to Scotland.

Merlin, scrapped in 1966, was the ninth A4 to be built, but with ‘Osprey’ plates removed No.9 became No.60027 Merlin for a season on the North Wales Coast.

Regaining original ‘Union of South Africa’ nameplates, for wanderings on the Settle & Carlisle, a run over the Welsh Marches and finally back to Scotland – in Glasgow and the Edinburgh 150 Celebrations.

We end with sequences of railtour workings over the whole of Britain, including the North Wales coast; the Settle-Carlisle and out of London, finishing with her ascent of Shap summit in November 2002.
