What nostalgic images these words bring instantly to mind! In a modern, technological world the ‘Age of Steam’ seems to belong to former, more glorious and exciting times. But, with nostalgia rampant, there’s a new ‘Age of Steam’ – today, as the giants of the past bring the golden age back to life.

This DVD is for all those who love the sight and sound of the steam railway and is a tribute to the dedicated bands of people who ensure that the most living of man’s machines – the steam engine – continues to bring countless hours of pleasure and enjoyment to hundreds of thousands of people everywhere. No stuffed museum pieces these – they really work for their living – smoke and steam pours out from every angle. The engines in this dvd are seen at work on preserved railways up and down Great Britain and on British Rail’s main lines – you can see them today and everyday, with this DVD.

If you have ever felt the slightest stirring of emotion at the sight and sound of a steam engine, this dvd is for you – with an expert commentary by former BBC Newsreader Peter Woods, you too can experience the nostalgia of smoke and steam.

Some of the best lineside photography of our steam locomotives at work on the main line and some preserved railways around the UK. Sit back and take in the sheer smoke and steam atmosphere of the programme!

A tribute to the renaissance in steam operations in the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland. ‘Scotland for Steam’ runs the advertising and is certainly is! On the railways steam is a major tourist atttraction, both on preserved lines and British Rail’s own main and branch lines.

Lowlands action is completed around Edinburgh’s suburban system, known as the ‘Sub’ and the Highlands form the most magnificent backdrop as we visit the Strathspey Railway at Aviemore, cross the mountains, with ‘Maude’ and follow BR’s well-known West Highland line to Fort William to Mallaig line.

Smoke & Steam - In Wales

Smoke & Steam - In Wales

Ref: KF262D

Price:£14.95

Quantity:

Wales has one of the largest associations with steam in the British Isles. The narrow gauge railways of the north west are famous for their tiny engines working hard, from the Tallyllyn (the world’s first preserved railway) to the Ffestiniog, the Snowdon Mountain Railway, the Welshpool and Llanfair, the Bala Lake, the Vale of Rheidol – they are all here in this dvd.

Wales has also seen many main line workings in the latter part of the 20th century, including a good many steam specials over its main lines. The North Wales route to Holyhead has to be a major player in main line steam operation.

British Rail’s ‘North Wales Coast Expresses’ have become part of the holiday scene from Holyhead to Chester and Crewe, so we start our views of ‘Smoke and Steam in Wales’ on that line and show how its possible to (nearly!) go right round the principality behind steam.

This is another all-action railway dvd – with engines from a ‘Prince’ to a ‘Princess’, a ‘Duchesss’ and a ‘Duke’, Coronation, Princess Royal and BR Pacifics, to humble tank engines and little centenarians!

Smoke & Steam - On the Settle & Carlisle

Smoke & Steam - On the Settle & Carlisle

Ref: KF263D

Price:£14.95

Quantity:

‘Settle and Carlisle’ – the words are as evocative to the railway enthusiast as ‘Smoke and Steam’ – put the two together and you have one of the most exciting experiences around! This dvd brings you a selection of fabulous images of steam locomotives hard at work today – over Great Britain’s premier scenic railway, the Settle and Carlisle, which runs through the Westmorland Mountains, unparalled in their majestic beauty.

The railway is a fitting monument to Victorian enterprise, its engineering features being conceived on the grand scale. From the lofty Ribblehead or Batty Moss Viaduct, to Rise Hill and Shotlock Tunnels, from Sherrif’s Brow to Baron Wood, from Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Dent – they are all here!

The locomotives – the cream of Britain’s railway history are represented by Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley, Flying Scotsman, Duchess of Hamilton, The Great Marquess, Clan Line, Green Arrow, City of Wells, Sir Lamiel, Princess Elizabeth, Kolhapur and Bahamas, as well as unnamed freight engines, mixed traffic engines and so on (5407, 5305, 48151 and 2005).

The runs included in this dvd serve to show the main features of the line, from preparation at Carnforth Shed, to the railway itself from Hellifield via Settle Junction and over the line known as the ‘Long Drag’, through Ribblehead, Blea Moor, Garsdale, Ais Gill, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, the Eden Valley to Carlisle itself.

All shots have been chosen to show locomotives really hard at work in the 1980s.

With the lack of steam over the line during the 1970s due to engineering work and pathing problems, this dvd is a valuable tribute to the important years of steam operation in the 1980s over the route.
