Dale Days

Ref: KF135D

Price:£12.95

Quantity:

Dale Days is a rare archive film of the Yorkshire Dales taken in colour during 1942. The 16mm film was taken by Charles Chislett from Rotherham. His footage shows the splendour of the Dales and the way of life in those early wartime years.

A visit to the creamery at Hawes is just one illustration of farming methods seen in his films. Enjoy this first colour film tribute to the wonderful Dales. A rare chance to view a unique record of Yorkshire Dales life at a time before the full mechanisation of farming and at a time when motor vehides were rarely seen on Dales roads.

This video has been produced from original 16mm film taken by the late Charles Chislett during the early 1940s. "Those who have never explored Wensleydale. Swaledale and Teesdale do not know England.... if you have seen Richmond Castle high against the sky, sunshine on the Tees beneath the Abbey Bridge of Egglestone, the mountains of Yorkshire from Ingleborough to Wild Board Fell - you do not forget."

In this film you will also meet the Hen of Hawes, the Dog of Dentdale and see the story of a Wensleydale cheese.

The Lake District in the Past

The Lake District in the Past

Ref: KF123D

Price:£12.95

Quantity:

A rare look at this wonderful area through colour film from the 1940s and 50s, plus some early 1930s footage of village life. We also view the colourful rushbearing procession in Ambleside in the 1950s and such things as sheep shearing – the hard way.

The colour footage was taken by two film-makers living in Yorkshire who, like many, would go to the Lakes for that annual holiday or for an adventurous walk on the fells. Charles Chislett lived in Rotherham for many years and was well known for his travelogue-style productions. He took very early colour footage of the Lakeland area, during the Second World War in fact. His 16mm cine film is exceptional. We end this DVD production with a seventeen minute colour film from the 1950s shot by Fred Brackenbury of Harrogate. His professional photographic style captures some wonderful scenes on the Lakes and in the hills.

So join us in or nostalgic look around one of England’s most favourite haunts and see life as it used to be.

The Wye Tour

The Wye Tour

Ref: KF250D

Price:£14.95

Quantity:

The Wye Tour’ A delightful scenic tour down the Wye Valley.

Filmed over the seasons this DVD explores the River Wye and the surrounding towns,

villages and countryside from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow where the river reaches the Severn estuary.

We retrace some of the steps of Georgian travellers who took a boat ride down this magnificent section of the Wye – becoming, many believe, the first tourists in Britain.

We begin this magical journey at Ross and sample a river trip inspired by the Georgian tourists from Symonds Yat northwards. On the way we meet local people associated with life on the river, including a gillie who explains the attraction of the River Wye to anglers. Sequences of the river take us down towards Monmouth and the modern-use of the Wye for leisure canoeists, now an

important part of the local economy.

We view the town of Monmouth before progressing down the Wye where we catch glimpses of the river’s industrial past at

Redbrook and Brockwier. The disused railway line which

followed the river all the way to Chepstow still has its redundant monuments on show in the form of elegant Victorian bridges which still remain straddling the river. We then progress to Tintern, one of the most sought after places of interest in the original ‘Wye Tour’. We end our journey at Chepstow and the point where the Wye joins the Severn. Altogether, a wonderful journey along this

spectacular river.

Weymouth and Portland in the Past

Weymouth and Portland in the Past

Ref: KF100D

Price:£12.95

Quantity:

Many of the films in this programme are from the South West Film and Television archive which is a treasure chest of film based around the independent television film collection which broadcast from the South West from the early 1960s. Other films are from film-makers who captured historic moments from Weymouth & Portland’s past.

For the first time, archive films of the area have been brought together to show past scenes in the harbour at Weymouth when the Channel Islands ferry and freight traffic was so important to the town. We see life on the promenade and the beach which has been part of local life for centuries. See Punch & Judy in the 1960s; last of the paddle steamers in 1967; unloading goods from Channel Islands boats; the demolition of the pier bandstand; the effects of storm damage along the Preston beach road; last days of brewing in Hope Square; sailing at Weymouth Week in 1979 prior to the 1980 Olympics; film star Kirk Douglas on location. Footage of the old Quay tramway and the very last train to Portland are included.

Two very detailed documentary films about Portland by Westward Television dating from the late 1970s give a very complete account of this fascinating Island. Look out as we see these rare films as you might just see yourself, a friend or a member of your family.

Altogether a feast of archive films.

Wimbourne in the Past

Ref: KF248D

Price:£12.95

Quantity:

More than at any time in our past, our towns and cities are undergoing great change. Fortunately, in the case of Wimborne, the important events such as preparations for war and the VE day celebrations and everyday life in the town was captured by film-makers. We will see fascinating films at the start of the second world war when engineers were in the area training for any eventuality. Many scenes with soldiers in the streets of Wimborne.

Other films, presented by local historian John Loader, show Reg Rodway’s films in and around Wimborne. He was a local garage owner and very much part of the community. Colour films by Reg Day show market day in the spring of 1945. The war was nearly over and local farmers gather at the livestock market. As the narrative suggests, the war is still on but the country needs to be fed.
