East London's Lost Stations (60-mins)

East London's Lost Stations (60-mins)

Ref: OV454D

Price:£15.95

Quantity:

When travelling or walking around London, have you ever passed a building and wondered is that an old railway station? Chances are that your assumption could have been correct because throughout the capital there are remains of former stations which have long since ceased to serve their intended purpose. In this programme we are guided around some of these by historian and writer Jim Connor.

Jim may well be known to you as the editor of The London Railway Record, and he has also produced various books on the subject. Having been born in Stepney, his first love has always been the lines of his native East End, and herer he will impart to you some of his extensive knowledge of selected local stations which are no longer open. When he started recording them back in the mid-1960s, many still boasted substantial remains, but with the passage of time much has disappeared. There is nevertheless a great deal which can still be seen, provided you know where to look for it.

Our journey starts with the Great Eastern main line from Liverpool Street where remains of the stations at Bishopsgate Low Level, Globe Road & Devonshire Street and Coborn Road can still be seen. We move on to Stratford Market, which closed in 1957, then see the impressive new Jubilee Line Extension depot which has been built nearby. Still on the Great Eastern, we travel to Lea Bridge at the time of its closure in 1985, and we see the sad windswept platforms submerging beneath a covering of foliage. Moving back towards the inner East End, we look at BowRoad station on the Blackwall Extension Railway. This closed in 1949, but it was extensively recorded by Jim before its platform buildings disappeared eighteen years later. Here we have 1960s archive film, together with recent footage showing the remains as they are today. At Burdett Road we see trolleybuses passing beneath the bridge, where recent new brickwork hinted at the station's recent demolition in the 1950s. Other former stations on the Fenchurch Street line are seen and we also include a rare piece of film showing the once extensive internal railway system in Beckton Gasworks. On the old North London Railway we have 1960s film of Popular line stations, as viewed from a special train and look at the surviving examples of the work of Edwin H Horne. This architect's style became synonymous with the NLR as Leslie Green did on the various Yerk's tube lines. Our programme finishes by travelling on the last train from Island Gardens to Poplar in the small hours of Saturday 9th.January 1999. Such is progress that by the end of the month much of Mudchure station has already been demolished! So sit back and enjoy this unusual armchair journey. If you are fascinated by London and its railway, you are sure to find plenty here to interest you.

London's Lost Underground Trains (60-mins)

Ref: OV450D

Price:£15.95

Like Onlines other video tapes about London’s Underground. this recording doesn't have talking heads or boring featureless cab rides in tunnels. Using film taken by competent underground enthusiasts it shows many lines and stations in the mid 1950’s onwards. Its a riot of red trains both tube cars and surface line stock.

Starting at Farringdon - a steam tour train with L44 passes - and Met electric loco No.16 follows it up to take over at New Cross Gate. Another steam tour - this time at Edgware Road with L46, LA8 is seen on another special.

Moving to Baker Street a general study of electric trains running from there.

‘T’ stock appears at several stations ‘O’, ‘P’ & ‘F’ stock trains are seen passing. A visit to Neasden features E class, L46, L44 - L53, also the new Pannier tanks.

A trip to Stanmore reveals the practise of including ‘standard stock’ used as trailers with 1938 tube cars. At Northwood Hills, steam trains for Marylebone still hurries by mixed in with the new DMU’s. The well known steam to electric change over is seen once again at Rickmansworth. Chesham saw its last steam train and ‘T stock appears. The Aylesbury LT service is briefly featured and the tip workings to Croxley is filmed.

Amongst red trains at Acton Town can be seen the gleaming aluminium 1956 stock on demonstration runs. Whilst at Acton Town, the quaint single car shuttle to South Acton is seen in detail, the red Q23 ear contrasting with the new style trains. Other trains pass on the nearby North London Line.

‘Standard stock’ on the Piccadilly Line is next prior to a visit to the Fast London Line various underground trains of all types are seen through the damp, gloomy stations and tunnels, back in the 50’s & 60’s. Drayton Park station and depot is seen next - in 1938 tube car days. The last day of these train are featured and battery loco’s haul them away through Finsbury Park and Farringdon. Oerlikon sets of the LNWR shared tracks with jointly owned tube stock near Harrow & Wealdatone filmed in the late 20’s. Finally a study of trains on the Eastern extensions of the Central Line in the 1950’s. A steam train hurries away from South Woodford. We finish our coverage at Ongar. However a more detailed review of the Ongar branch can be seen in our video. Lost Lines around London.

In 1938 an open day at New Barnet displays new engines and coaches. Kings Cross Loco sheds are seen in a foggy 1947. The last "Atlantic" makes its run in 1950,1960-63 sees A3's, A4's in action. Just outside St Pancras track laying is in the hands of a steam crane & an ancient Midland goods loco. The Euston expresses pass by Harrow in 1927, Claughton's, Super D's, Precursor's, ln-rebuild Royal Scots, Patriots & Coronation Scot's. Also Watford Electrics and Bakerbo Tube trains of the period. The 1945 Bourne End train disaster is dealt with in full, the engine involved, a Royal Scot is seen later rebuilt with a tapered boiler.

Euston itself is featured in a film of the Royal Scot express, scenes at Camden shed, also in colour. On the Southern a 1938 film shows the old signal box straddling the tracks. Nine Elms activity is next. "School's" appear at Cannon St, a 4-4-0 at London Bridge, and at East Croydon Baltics, and a 4-4-0 pass by. Waterloo has 779 in Southern Livery departing. London's Lost Stations (57-mins)

Ref: OV973D

Price:£15.95

Quantity:

A collection of films made by leading railway enthusiasts shows smoky steam engines under sooty Victorian arches, abandoned stations and shunting in leafy suburbia.

Stations and lines seen are: The great Doric Arch at EUSTON and the station itself being rebuilt. Down the line we see Stanmore Village and Belmonts last train. CannonStreet and the badly bombed Blackfriars. In the City now and the very first "Tube" station of 1890. King William Street: this interesting relic contains tunnels still in a war time state. Just about underground, the old platforms at Wood Lane. Posters of 1947 still readable.

Trams ran underground too and a visit is made to the Holborn station in the subway at Kingsway. Snow Hill station last saw passengers in 1916; in 1985 you could still see old signals and platforms.

Steam trains at Faringdon and Moorgate come next on the "Widened Lines".

At Kings Cross, the N2s struggle up the incline on their way to the Northern Heights. The New Works plan of 1935 leads us to Highgate station and Alexandra Palace in steam days and the last trains there in 1952.

The story of what happened to that plan is told with pictures of the relevant locations including Edware GN station remains and the new Aldenham Works. 1938 tube stock Northern line trains appear at Finchley Central (filmed in 1970).

East London is not forgotten After steam trains ay Fenchurch Street, a tour through derelict stations in the East End on route to Bow Road, Stepney East, Stratford Market and Popular. Rare pictures of the Midland's Bel No.1, a battery powered shunter alongside West India Dock, Bank Signal Box. Also a North London 0-6-0T, and a Jinty at MIllwall Junction. Southern Region: The Woodside to Sanderstead line just prior to closure. Also Eltham Park. The branch to Crystal Palace High Level is seen next, still runiing electric trains, stations at Lordship Lane, Upper Sydenham and the ghostly terminus itself. Rare views of a rail tour at Morton abbey Station.

Back to closed underground stations: the story of the Aldwych branch is told, full coverage of the train service and why the line had to close. Cab rides, special trains and the last night is seen. A disused tube station only recently opened to visits, Down Street on the Piccadilly Line. Closed in 1932 it was used as a temporary cabinet headquarters when the Second World War started. Many reminders of those days can be seen.

This is the fourth in the highly popular "Lost London" series. It looks at some of the minor lines around the Metropolis. Some have gone and other survive but in a greatly changed state. Some had steam trains, others diesel or electric. Introduced by Jim Connor of the "London Railway Record" magazine we visit the following lines or branches. West Drayton to Staines West, Uxbridge Vine Street on its last day. Hounslow West - the original station, Belmont to Harrow ("New" archive footage) Croxley Green Branch and Depot showing B.R. trains and the 1938 Tube stock still running to Watford Junction. The line that never happened - Edgware to Bushy. The 1935 New Works were finally demolished and the Aldenham Depot (later Bus Works) was pulled down. Aylesbury High Street Station on its last day. Underground now: Drayton Park Depot last day of 1938. Tube trains, The Ongar Branch: with three different films made in the steam era, then the story since then with the last train leaving in 1994. We follow with what’s happened with scenes filmed since. Kensington-Olympia steam services for Post Office workers. Then briefly — a tour of South London visits Bricklayers Arms, and Smithfield Market once had trains arriving in its basement at a special goods platform. We see meat going up in a hoist. New footage shot today shows the surviving remains. Coulsdon North Station and trains. Elmers End to Addiscombe and Wimbledon to West Croydon closed recently, most of which will be incorporated into Croydon Tramlink. On the last day of service on both branches our cameras were at various locations. Witness the last train from West Croydon.

More London's Lost Steam (??-mins)

In this video, we look at London’s railways during the final decades of steam and provide you with a feast of nostalgia. At Paddington various classes are featured ranging from Collett’s Kings to pannier tanks, including the 97xx type. which were fitted with condensing apparatus specifically for working freight traffic over city widened lines.

A GWR diesel railcar journeys between Clapham Junction and Ealing Broadway, and part of the West London Line in the early 1950s. We pass the disused Uxbridge Road station, which although derelict still retained all its buildings. We pause at Ealing and watch various steam hauled trains in action including the push-pull working serving Greenford.

The line between Clapham Junction and Waterloo in the harsh winter of 1947, steam locomotives had to be used to rescue electric stock due to ice on the conductor rails. More action follows, with various once familiar types included a Lord Nelson 4-6-0, and Bulleids ungainly, QIs. We also see Bulleid’s pacifies both in their intended 'air smoothed' condition, and as later rebuilt.

Locomotives at Vauxhall, Nine Elms motive power depot. Clapham Junction. Wimbledon. Wandsworth Town. Barnes and New Cross, for a succession of trains in the 1950s. Maunsell’s Schools 4-4-Os were still commonplace. Also Bulleid’s double deck electric unit, long before it was repainted in blue.

Plenty of steam action around Wandsworth Road, Clapham, Brixton and 11cm hill. Here we see pacifies working the Golden Arrow and some of Maunsell’s W class 2-6-4Ts, together with other types. Amongst these perhaps the most unusual is one of Fowler’s condensing 2-6-2Ts, working bunker first through Brixton with a single van.

We visit the North London Line when ex-LNWR Oerlikon sets still worked the Watford and Richmond services also a railtour worked by a gleaming Park 0-6-0T, which handed over to a grimy jinty at Miliwall Junction. The photographer was intent on recording the change of locomotives but fortunately, we get a good view of the station building.

For the centenary celebrations of the London Tilbury & Southcnd Railway. 4-4-2T No. 41966 assumed its old name of Thunderstey. It is seen at various locations, including Stratford. Also at Straford, we witness some Thompson B1 4-6-Os. before moving down to Romford to see a Britannia pacific pass with an up express for Liverpool Street.

LNER express power is represented by a rare sequence of an A4 pacific in unlined wartime black at Marylebone. We also see the preserved A3 Flying Scotsman, passing through the disused Midland station at Finchley Road. which closed in 1927. but still retained many of its buildings.

Whether you are fortunate enough to remember those days first hand or not, you can enjoy everyday railway scenes which are now sadly lost forever.

The Westerham and Hawkhurst steam branches were attractive lines in Kent both serving the main London & Dover route. Electrification of the main line and falling income from the branches were their downfall. The usual excuse of future infrastructure costs also added fuel to the closure decisions.

Using film from Britian's best cameramen, Online studies them both before and on closure days. Hawkhurst in 1961 witnessed "Undertakers" and a special toured the line a week later. Also the Westerham branch closed in October 1961.

Meandering through some of the most lovely countryside famous for hill-top villages, hop gardens and wooded landscapes, the tracks with their little tank engines were a favourite location for the best of film-makers whose work is included here. The H class and the occasional C class engines were the mainstay of the motive power, hauling rickety ancient coaches. This DVD edits the old films neatly and includes scenes filmed recently, forty years after closure. The film is introduced by Harry Hickmott former fireman - Hawkhurst Branch.

We join Jim Cononor and Barbara Butler of the London Railway Record for a guided tour around some of London's disused stations and lines.

Starting at the Cox's Walk footbridge, we embark on a short ride along the Crystal Palace High Level branch using rare archive film taken from the last passenger train in 1954.

Remaining in south London we look at the long closed stations at Waterloo Necropolis, Grosvenor Road, Battersea Park Road, Camberwell New Road, Southwark Park, Spa road and Blackfriars SER. Beside the former entrance to Blackfriars we see stone name panels where remnants of incised lettering continue to display part of the station's name and that of the original company. Remarkable suvivals indeed particulary when the last train called at the end of 1868!

Moving to East London, we visit the one time "Commercial Street Office" at Bishopsgate Low Level with it eerie subterranean passageways. Bishopsgate closed during the First World War and never reopened.

Coninuing the subterranean theme, we encounter some abandoned stations on the Underground network including York Road, Down Street and Brompton Road. Although screened from passing trains for many years much of the original platform level tiling at Brompton Road remains in good condition, even some of the name panels. The views featured in the programme were filmed during a special visit organised for the London Railway Record editorial team back in 1997 whilst research was being carried out for the book "London's Disused Undergrond Stations".

Other Underground locations are visited, including the old Central London Railway station at Wood Lane, closed in 1947. Here we join a tour party during an "Open House" weekend in 1999 and take a look at the premises which were in the process of being removed during 2003.

More recent closures have been the Jubilee Line platforms at Charing Cross and the temporary Heathrow Express station at Heathrow Junction. The latter opened in January 1998 and closed four months later.

We complete our travels by joining a steam hauled train from North Woolwich to Palace Gates, looking at the various stations along the route. Their green and cream paintwork may have faded but the positively oozed with character and created an atmosphere which has now been completely lost.

Filmed over 30 years, this video tells the story of one of Britain's unusual form of traction. The DEMU was adopted by BR Southern Region to eliminate steam trains. The first samples (called "Tadpoles") had narrow bodies needed for restricted tunnels. The films of Fred Ivey shows them in many locations, then the last trip before retirement. They are seen working on LTafterwards and the KE&SR in 1993.

The second type called the "Hampshire" is seen working the Swanage Branch before closure. Here also is the last DEMU day at East Grinstead. In 2004 they worked the Uckfield line and Hastings to Ashford before their retirement. Extensive coverage of these trains is shown, along with samples of the "Tadpole" stock working occasionally to Hastings. We end with a trip to London

Steam around Folkestone

Featuring steam trains in the 1920s at Sandling Junction and briefly the Hythe Branch. Expresses of the period thunder by and the "Man of Kent" is made up at Central Station as the "Golden Arrow" passes by.

The harbour branch is busy with three or four R1 tank engines dragging Pullman trains up the 1 in 30 incline. There are later scenes of the same activity after ex-GW panniers replaced engines.

Southern Railway ships are seen arriving and departing from the pier with cars being winched aboard.

Moving to more recent times, all the shipping has disappeared and the harbour branch sees many steam specials adding the incline to their journeys. We see preserved steam locomotives "Tangmere", "Lord Nelson", "Oliver Cromwell", "Bodmin", "Britannia", and Black 5 No.44932 as well as Class 73, 47 and 67 diesels on the "Blue Pullman" & "Golden arrow" coach sets. Plus the preserved Hastings narrow bodied "Thumper" DEMU.

Steam trains Old and New.

This tape features the Steam Festivals in 1999 and 2000. in Maidstone. When shuttle steam trains ran to and from Tunbridge. A Standard Class 4 tank ran in 1999 and 'Bodmin' a Weit Country Pacific hauled trains in 2000

'Bodmin' also ran frequently on the 'Cathedrals Express' which travelled from London to Canterbury and returned through Dover. This video tape covers many locations in these journeys. showing Bearsted, Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Headcorn, Staplehurst, Marden and Tonbridge.

However fascinating footage in-between shows a great variety of archive films from 1927 onwards. Steam features prominently at Tonbridge, Maidstone West, Gravesend West. A brief look at the Hawkhurst branch, which will be featured in a future release from Online. K.F.S.R., in I954 on the Headcorn section. R.H.D.Rly in the 1960's, Sittingbourne and Kemsley paper mills in 1968. This huge Industrial complex had three narrow gauge engines and two standard gauge locos in service together wrth an overheard cableway in action. Another paper mill at Aylesford near Maidstone had 'Howe' shunting untill 1969. A fireless loco is seen working in falling snow at Swanscombe. Two coal mines. Betteshanger and Snowdown. used steam engines all day.

In 1970 Online cameras visited them both and this leads neatly to a study filmed this year of the East Kent Railway which used to link up with other collieries,

At Sandling Junction the breanch to Hythe features a train arriving in the 1930’s.

Folkestone Junction station and the branch down to the habour had Steam locos and a 1930s film featured here shows the old trains meeting Southern Railway ships ready to sail to France. Cars had to be winched aboard then!

Also featured the much loved Ramsgate Tunnel miniature electric railway which used an old SR funnel to reach the beach and a fun fair.

With many more scenes too many to mention here, this should give viewers very many hours reliving the great days of - Steam in Kent.

Victorian engineers faced problems in designing and building trains for their small iron tubes under London. In this programme we take a look at films and videos of London's Underground trains from "Padded Cells" to today's complex cars which effortlessly carry millions to work and play. This is no number-crunching or rivet-counting saga. No talking heads or boring interviews. It's just a big parade of most of the cars over the years in their interesting environments and changing liveries. The batches of "padded cells", the "Standards", brief 35s, then the everlasting 38s, 56s, 59/62s, the 60s, Victoria Line 67s, 72s, flat-fronted 83s, then the prototypes of 1986, all play their part in everyday life in the big city now dominated by the modern fleet in service today.

Ref: OV341D

Price:£15.95

This dvd has gathered together all its material on the 'New Works plan of 1935' and included them here. In this plan a great many London suburban steam lines would be taken over by the then London Passenger Transport Board and incorporated in Tube lines. But the Second World War intervened and much of the works were cancelled. Using films from leading film makers of the day, these works are examines both then and now. Take Highgate High Level station, itself in a deep cutting below the Archway in North London. Rebuilt about 1938/39 it still hasn't received a passenget tube train. A few steam trains appeared from Alexandra Palace but these stopped in 1954. We see the last steam workings from Moorgate to Finsbury Park. Trains were supposed to reach Bushey, north of Edware, but just arches were built. The great car sheds at Aldenham were partially finsihed but then went into war work. later they were a bus overhaul works and we see them finally being demolished. Underground trains from Moorgate via Drayton Park were supposed to go to Finsbury park onto Highgate and the Palace but this never happened. A great many miles of cables and conductor rails were laid but taken up again. 1938 stock trains had to be hauled by battery locos from Drayton Park to Highgate and on to Golders Green or Acton for overhaul. Today you can walk the line to Highgate. In 1962 a large study was made of the abandoned line to the Palace; here were burnt out signalboxes, platforms, huts and at the Palace car auctions took place in the former coal yard. We take a brief look at the Central Line scheme where progress was made after the war and tube trains reached Woodford soon after. The Northern Line plans were quietly dropped partly due to the new "Green Belt" policy. Highgate High level still invites interest and can be seen today.

Ian's Note:- There is also a book related to all this called "By Tube Beyond Edgware" by Tony Beard. It was published in 2002 by "Capital Transport". ISBN 1-85414-246-1. I have this book & it is very interesting and recommended. However I don't know whether it is still in print as I bought it from one of those "remaindered" bookshops in 2009.
