We are making a journey with ICE 386 from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof to Padborg just over the Danish border half way up the Jutland peninsula. We're now at Neumünster 73 kilometres from the Hauptbahnhof. The journey has so far has taken 50 minutes.

About ICE 386. This service is really a shake down exercise for developing the international route between Berlin, Hamburg and Århus / Copenhagen.

One of the highlights of our journey is the Rensburg Hochbrücke over the Nord-Ostsee Kannal. The railway arrived at Rensburg before the canal - in 1845 from the south and in 1854 from the north. The lines joined in 1856 by means of a bridge over the Eider, the river that was later to be canalised. In June 1887 canal construction work started at Holtenau near Kiel. It took the 9,000 workers eight years to build. On June 21, 1895 the canal was officially opened by Kaiser Wilhelm II. To cope with the movements of a new breed of battleships to be stationed at Kiel plans for enlargement of the canal were proposed at the beginning of the 20th Century. This would include a new railbridge to cross the larger / wider canal. Construction of the high-bridge began in 1911 and took just two years! Everything was open just in time for WW1!

We conclude our run at Padborg the first station in Denmark

Have a look at Hamburg with us before catching ICE 33 to Copenhagen.DB and DSB have come together to improve their services between Berlin, Hamburg and Copenhagen and the result of much hard work by both railways is the new ICE service. The high tech trains are routed over the Vogelfluglinie via Lubeck and the Puttgarden to Rudby train ferry, the first time an ICE has taken to the water! It's a great experience. But first we must get to Lubeck. This is interesting in itself as the line is currently being electrified.

This is a run that's quite different from anything else in the area. It's the only mainline in northern Germany to receive the prestigious Thomas Cook scenic railway accreditation. You will see why! From the Lübecker Bucht, the dunes north of the small city, through the low lying countryside to Oldenburg and then across the Fehmarnsund bridge to the island of Fehmarn. It's a dash across the island- the Vogelfluglinie- to Puttgarden in the ICE, we can't afford to be late - we have a ferry to catch!

The Puttgarden Rødby train ferry Then ICE TD Rødby to Næstved. Time to explore the vessel while our ICE TD has a welcome rest on the deck below. It’s a 45 minute sailing so we have a bite to eat and some fresh Danish air before rejoining our train at Rødby Færge and continue north east towards Nykøbing just over the bridge that separates Lolland and Falster. It’s an attractive run under clear Scandinavian skies for the next 60 mins to Næstved. Very rural - very Danish!

At Hamm ICE 857 is joined by sister ICE2 unit 847. This train ran from Cologne Deutz through Düsseldorf, Duisberg, Bochum and Dortmund. The two ICE2 sets are now joined and are ready to depart. We travel to Hanover through: Gütersloh, Bielefeld, Herford, Minden, Wunstorf and Seelze. While not a particularly large yard in terms of the number of sorting sidings available, about 16, Seelze Rbf was extensively modernised between 2000 and 2005 using the latest in electronic control technology. Hanover Hauptbahnhof is the third station constructed on or near this site. It is very much the centre of the rail network in the state.

Ticket to Ride No.111: OBB Cabride+ The Semmeringbahn

Ticket to Ride No.111: OBB Cabride+ The Semmeringbahn

Ref: FH056D

Price:£24.00

Quantity:

The Semmeringbahn links Vienna with Italy and Slovenia. Our journey starts at the Südbahnhof for passenger trains, and Kledering -Austria's most important classification yard for freight. At Wiener Neustadt there is a secondary freight yard where trains can be held and prepared, if necessary, before going on to the Semmering. Beyond this the railway runs across the flat Steinfeld through St Egyden and Gloggnitz, where there was, until the advent of high powered electric traction, the base station for the Semmering north ramp. The place where banker locomotives and assistants are attached and detached. The scenic section of the Semmering really begins around Payerbach Reichenau, 82 kilometres from Vienna at an altitude of 494 metres where there are still facilities to hold freight trains before they head for the hills! The section between Klamm and Breitenstein includes a number of short tunnels and viaducts, all the time the line is climbing at 1.9 per cent. This area is very remote and inaccessible, one of the most interesting elements of the whole route!

The drama of the Semmering is behind us. From now on we follow the valleys rather than cut across them. The scenery on this busy international route is just as lovely, but running alongside the river we can pick up the pace. First stop is Bruck an der Mur - not a large town but a surprisingly industrial one for a sub-alpine area. Much of this industrial activity is related to the metals business - the area arguably produces the finest steel in the world- used by companies such as Audi where quality is not compromised. At Bruck we lose the line to Graz but gain the route from Salzburg and the heavy traffic to Slovenia. Beyond Bruck we look at the fascinating rail geopgraphy of Leoben and St Michael before concluding at Knittelfeld

Ticket to Ride No.113: OBB Cabride+ Knittelfeld to Klagenfurt

Ref: FH054D

Price:£23.00

We continue our journey southwest towards Italy with our OBB EC 531. We are now at Knittelfeld, a small town alongside the Mur. The Tauern mountain range is to our right the Gleinalpe to our left. The weather is just right as we leave the town. Our next stop in this sub alpine idle is Zeltweg, indeed the IC becomes something of a regional train stopping at what seem like large villages all the way to St Veit. Here the nature of the railway changes and it's a fast run to Klagenfurt, the capital city of Carinthia and the sixth largest in Austria.
