The English Electric Type 4s were introduced by British Railways in 1958 and rapidly became the pride of the diesel fleet, working top link duties. Later in their working lives they became maids of all work, hauling heavy freight as well as cross country passenger duties. This programme explores the Class, starting in the early years of main line diesel traction and ending in the final years of the Class in the 1980s.

Origins and Introduction. The first main line diesels in the UK with the LMS and Southern examples and their influence on the designs of the English Electric Type 4s. The LMS 10000 and 10001 are shown in action on the Midland and West Coast Main Lines.

The Production Series. The Class at work in the 1960s on the West & East Coast Main Lines and in East Anglia. Includes the change to headcode panels and the adoption of yellow warning panels as well as views of the locos on shed.

The 1970s. Film from around the network including York, Darlington, Guide Bridge, the Settle & Carlisle and the Trans Pennine routes including Copy Pit. Duties include heavy freight on the ‘Long Drag’, shunting activities plus express passenger and regional passenger work.

The Royal Train Rare film of a Class 40 on one of the last duties.

The 1980s. The rundown of the Class with film from the North West of England, holiday trains to Skegness , the Crewe Works Open Day, the last survivor D200 at work plus at the Rainhill Celebrations and the final engineering duties.

Specials. Including trips on the Southern and D200 on the final runs in 1988 including the ‘Tubular Belle’ in North Wales and the very last run from London to Norwich & York in 1988.

Preservation. D200 and other members of the Class on various preserved railways plus 45 145 on the main line.
