American Railway Vol. 1: 200 miles from Las Vegas Part 1

Ref: LN2001D

Filmed in February 2007 we witness a whole host of General Motors-EMD and General Electric monster locomotives at work on freight in the superb and fascinating desert scenery. SD70, DASH-9, SD40 and many others are seen and heard on long 100-plus wagon consists from double-stack container trains to autoracks, manifest and block freight workings. Our journey takes us from Caliente in Nevada, through the famous Kingman Canyon in Arizona where we follow the old ?Route 66? road on to the vast plains that skirt Winona and Winslow, before we head to the San Francisco Mountain range around Flagstaff and Williams. Our final feature then takes us next to the Colorado river on the border with California, where trains with up to 5 locomotives storm the grade out of the Mohave Valley. It is difficult not to be amazed at the sheer power and noise that emanate from these near mile-long freight trains!

American Railway Vol. 2: 200 miles from Las Vegas Part 2

Ref: LN2002D

Filmed in February 2007 we journey from the famous Mojave desert where we see mile-long container trains headed by up to five powerful locomotives, surrounded by rugged plains and distant mountains. We journey to Warren amidst the unusual ?Joshua trees? as mixed freight workings appear with a line up of different locomotives classes sporting a myriad of colour schemes. The main feature of this programme looks at the famous Cajon Pass which takes the BNSF and Union Pacific tracks out of the Los Angeles basin and up on to the Mojave plains. Faced with stiff gradients we can see and hear the locomotives struggling to keep their huge trains on the move. A whole host of General Motors-EMD and General Electric classes are seen including some dating from the early-1960s as well as brand-new locomotives which have not long entered service. This series provides an exciting look at modern-day U.S. railroading.

American Railway Vol. 3: 200 miles from Las Vegas Part 3

Ref: LN2003D

Filmed in February 2007 we journey from the Northern Mojave desert around Cima Hill (the UP line to Las Vegas), to the junction with the BNSF at Daggett, before moving on to the town of Mojave. We then travel to one of the most famous railroad features in the US; the Tehachapi loop. We begin the climb up to Tehachapi at the foothills around Caliente as long freight trains with four locos on the front and two on the rear blast their way up the gradients in spectacular style. Union Pacific and BNSF locos are seen, from the mighty Dash-9 to the equally powerful SD-70Ms, all in a variety of colour schemes and shades of ?road dust? deposits. Our final section covers the impressive spiral at Tehachapi where trains pass over the top of themselves as the line loops towards the summit, these scenes have got to be seen to be believed! There is no doubt that the US railroads are particularly impressive both in terms of size and scale this series provides an exciting look at modern-day U.S. railroading.

American Railway Vol. 4: Trains Around Kentucky Part 1

American Railway Vol. 4: Trains Around Kentucky Part 1

Ref: LN2004D

This programme is the first in a three-part series featuring the railways to be found in the US State of Kentucky. and in the neighbouring States of Illinois and Tennessee.

Filmed in May 2008 we also call into the Bluegrass Railroad Museum to look at the preserved stock on display. The mainline routes through Kentucky abound with different types of traction sporting many different and colourful liveries: we see examples from BNSF, CSX, NS, R J CORMAN, KCS, CONRAIL, and UNION PACIFIC. Many of the sequences show the full length of the train - not cut off as soon as the train locos have passed by! We feature the lines south of Lexington where NS Dash-9s are seen on double-stack container trains and mixed freights; onwards to Guthrie and Crofton where CSX traction is seen on grain and coal traffic. Two of the major bridges that cross the Ohio and great Mississippi rivers are viewed at Henderson and Thebes, where we also witness a working steam-driven paddle steamer making its way onto the river. We conclude the programme in northern Tennessee as BNSF and NS traction storm by the camera with horns blazing - if you like big US railroad action, you'll love this!

American Railway Vol. 5: Trains Around Kentucky Part 2

Ref: LN2005D

This programme is the second in a three-part series featuring the railways to be found in the US State of Kentucky & in the neighbouring States of Illinois, Ohio & Tennessee. Filmed in May 2008 the highlight of the programme is the inaugural run of R J Corman’s ex-Chinese QJ steam loco from Louisville to Lexington on 24th May.

The programme begins in the south of the State on the line towards Tennessee which runs through the Appalachian Mountains; a variety of double-stack container trains and mixed manifests are seen in the foothills around Sloans Valley; also seen are freights heading across the girder bridge at Burnside. We head north on the busy line east of Louisville and witness Norfolk Southern operated freights with massive line-ups of motive power, including Dash 8, Dash 9s, SD60s & SD70s locomotives.

At Hamilton, north of Cincinnati, we see NS and CSX traction running over the same tracks as we study action over a busy junction. Finally, we travel to La Grange and the famous street-running section through the town’s main street - a sight truly unbelievable as massive freights battle with the road traffic!

This programme is the third and final part in our series on the railways to be found in the US State of Kentucky & in the neighbouring States of Illinois and Ohio. Louisville - a significant railway crossroads in the west of the State; we call in to various yards and to the junction at Central Avenue, here CSX Dash9-ES44 are seen on long trains of car transporters, also seen are R J Corman GM-GP38-2, and SD40-2 locos on empty slab and CSX Dash-8s on a manifest. North of the city we see ancient 1950s Louisville and Indiana Railroad’s GP-11s during shunting operations.

Waddy - East of Louisville on the Norfolk Central mainline to the south into Tennessee. Dash 9-C40s, GP38-2, SD60, SD70, GE Dash-8 make up the motive power to be seen on a mixture of freight services.

Southern Kentucky - we previously visited the lines around Sloans Valley in issue number 5, this time we see more long freights struggling up the gradients between the rocky escarpments, including Dash-9s, Dash-8s and SD-60m.

Hamilton - north of Cincinnati as CSX SD-60, Dash-8, SD-40-2 and NS Dash-9 are seen on manifests, racks and stacks through this busy junction location. We continue to the town of Carlisle as autoracks and a manifest blast their way north, with Dash-8s and SD-40s up front.

South of Dayton, Ohio - CSX AC44 , SD50 on a long manifest, a Power Station Switcher, CN SD-60f, Dash-8, Dash-9, SD-40-2, CSX SD-60s are just some of the engines seen on a parallel CSX and NS mainline to the south, near to the town of Carlisle.

La Grange - more incredible footage of trains running through the main street of this town situated just to the north of Louisville. CSX SD70-mac, SD-60, ES44-DC, AC-44W, SD40-2, SD-50 and Dash-8 make up the locomotives seen on manifests and trains of Autoracks.

American Railway Vol. 7: Ohio River to Lake Erie (100-mins)

American Railway Vol. 7: Ohio River to Lake Erie (100-mins)

Ref: LN156D

This programme follows a journey from West Virginia northwards through the State of Ohio to the shores of Lake Erie.

We look at the railways running along either side of the Ohio River including a route which was originally the famous Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad (known as the ‘Chessie’) and which today is operated by the CSX railroad company. We study freight traffic through the steel-making city of Ashland, where long coal and manifest services are seen, as well as a switcher on a coke working, traversing tracks so uneven that sea-sickness tablets would normally be the order of the day! Another interesting sight is that of an ex-GP30 locomotive known as a road slug, working a train of scrap metal paired with its ‘mother’.

The programme journey's into West Virginia as we see some interesting scenes of Norfolk and Southern tracks crossing over the CSX ‘Chessie’ route at Kenova via the impressive Ohio River Bridge towering above the town’s streets. CSX freights and NS trip workings are seen including modern and older locomotives at work. We cross into Ohio on the Norfolk Southern line which runs north to eventually reach Cleveland; we also cover the CSX route through West Virginia over the long climb through the small town of Hurricane, where a 130-wagon coal train really tests the train locomotives – an impressive sight for North American Railroad fans!

The programme then moves to the East of Cleveland near to the shores of Lake Erie on the CSX route east to Buffalo, which eventually reaches New York. CSX, NS, Conrail, BNSF and Union Pacific railroad locomotives are seen on a variety of workings, including double-stack container trains, grain, manifest, coal, oil and autoracks.

Finally we pay a return to the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific main line in southern Kentucky as we witness trains through the steep cutting at Kings Mountain and over the trestle bridge at South Fork. A fascinating range of trains, in-country locations and locomotive liveries are on offer in material which was only just filmed in May 2009.

American Railway Vol. 8: Power over the Alleghenies (??-mins

American Railway Vol. 8: Power over the Alleghenies (??-mins

Ref: LN161D

In this programme we witness some of the most powerful diesel locomotives working in the United States, with superb soundtracks of trains struggling up grades over the Allegheny Mountains. We cover two routes including the old Baltimore and Ohio line over Sand Patch, now CSX, and the Pennsylvania Railroad over the summit at Gallitzin, close to the famous Horseshoe Curve, now Norfolk Southern territory.

We begin at Sand Patch where BNSF & CSX locos storm up the grade with container & manifests headed by SD50, SD70Mac, Dash-9s & Dash-8s: we also see Amtrak’s ‘The Capitol’ as it travels between Chicago & Washington.

We then travel to the Norfolk Southern route where freight trains are banked up the grades by powerful SD40E & SD40-2 locos - the sound from these unsilenced machines is awesome! To add to the variety, container, mixed freight, coal trains, trash trains, gravel & a load of farm equipment are also seen with a mixture of SD60, SD70, Dash-9, AC44-CW & Dash-8 locos up front.

At Altoona we see Amtrak P40-2s on ‘The Pennsylvanian’ passenger working, Conrail liveried SD40-2s on helper duties & even a shot of a GG1 electric in Altoona’s National Railroaders Museum.

Travelling back to line through Hyndman to witness CSX Dash-8s & SD50-2s on freight as well as a spectacular scene from Wills Creek Valley of two freight trains passing on tight curves.

Finally we are back at Cresson on the old PRR route to witness what has got to be one of the loudest sequences we’ve yet filmed, a 120-wagon coal train headed up the grade by two SD70s with the train being pushed from the rear by four SD40 helpers.
