A Day in the Life of Two Talyllyns

A Day in the Life of Two Talyllyns

Ref: GW218D

Price:£19.99

Quantity:

A unique look at two locomotives with the same name. One a diminutive 2 foot gauge steam engine, the other a mighty Virgin Trains electric locomotive capable of 100mph.

About "A Day In The Life Of Two Talyllyns"

Two locomotives came together in 2001 to celebrate the 50 years of success of the Tallylyn Railway in Wales, pioneers of railway preservation. Virgin Trains named express electric locomotive 86258 Talyllyn in honour of this achievement. The two locomotives couldn't lead more different lives, the steam Talyllyn hurtles up the valley of the Afon Fathew at a full 15 mph, whereas her namesake surges over the Virgin Network at 100 mph.

The electric works from dawn 'till dusk and more, sitting in a draughty siding at night.

The oldtimer is lovingly woken each morning and carefully fed coal and water until she has steam. At night the old lady is pampered with a warm shed. Yet out ancient machine perhaps deserves her kindnesses, entering service as she did in 1864, a century before the electric. So see the two of them now and enjoy this comparison of a days work for each.

The weather was magnificent and the images are unforgettable. Perhaps the programme shows that electric locomotives can have charm as well as old steam engines. And of course the video has a sad twist at the end of it. A Whistler classic!

Cardiff Valley Lines

Cardiff Valley Lines

Ref: GW329D

OUT OF STOCK

Price:£15.00

plus Brecon Mountain Railway 1989 & 2000.

The Cardiff Valley Lines were privatised and became the smallest of the UK francises, with services from Penarth and Barry to Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr and Rhymney and with sidelines to Coryton, Cardiff Bay and a service to Newport. Valley Lines were probably running the densest DMU operation in the UK, serving the capital of Wales, Cardiff and they had a jewel in the crown, a set of morning and evening commuter trains run with locomotives and coaches. Most of the time venerable Class 37s hauled 4 car trains of Mk2 coaches but occasional visitors could be found. the running of Class 37s with frequent stops and full power starts attracted a lot of attention from enthusiasts. This video taken in 1998 shows the full glory of the service with the locomotives, the DMUS and the visitors. In 2007, Arriva Trains Wales has the franchise so things are not quite the same. This video offers the Valley Lines in its heyday.

The extra feature shows the Brecon Mountain Railway with two glimpses, one in 1989 and the other in 2000. The "Graf Schwerin Lowitz" and Baldwin are shown.

This is the actual Virgin Trains Route Learning and refresher video, made for the line. It shows you all the speed restrictiöns and warnings, all the signal numbers, all the tunnels and their lengths and all the crossings and named civil engineering features. It also has information on the routes through the major junctions. So if you want to ride both ways between Crewe and Holyhead and see things as the professional driver sees it - this is the programme to watch.

In order to make the journey fit on to 2 video discs, some ofo the sequences have been speeded up by 25%. Great Western Railway Locomotives

Ref: GW328D

Price:£19.99

A record of GWR locomotives that can still be seen and appreciated today, on preserved lines all over Britain. The sights and sounds of steam continue in the extra feature - Shakespeare Express.

About "Great Western Locomotives"

The grace and power of Great Western Locomotives, with their green paintwork, shining brass nameplates and copper-capped chimneys, makes them a favorite with railway enthusiasts. Today there are many more examples of the order than from any other company.

This volume combines brilliant action footage of working engines, together with a clear explanation of the different types and how they fit into the epic GWR story. The glorious sights and sounds of steam come to a wonderful climax in the additional feature - SHAKESPEARE EXPRESS, which takes you on the steam trains that work between Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon. A visit behind the scenes to Tyseley, scenes at the lineside to see the train rush past at 60mph and a thrilling, roaring ride on the footplate of ROOD ASHTON HALL, provide a fitting climax to this DVD. The clarity of vision and clear sound allow you to really enjoy the expert photography that takes you to places not open to the public.

4965 ROOD ASHTON HALL stands at Birmingham Snow Hill station with the Shakespeare Express from Stratford. In this volume there are scenes from her footplate.

Narrow Gauge Story Vol 1

Narrow Gauge Story Vol 1

Ref: GW220D

OUT OF STOCK

Price:£12.95

In 1832 the Ffestiniog Railway surprised the 19th.Century transport industry by building a fully functional railway to a gauge of 1' 11¾". The success of this line led to the building of many more narrow gauge lines both in the UK and throughout the world.

This DVD uses both film and video footage to illustrate the proliferation of these lines showing the little trains in action with some wonderful action sequences. On the Ffestiniog we learn of the reasons for the narrow gauge followed by visits to other little trains in Wales including Dinorwic and the Welsh Highland Railway with it awesome Garratts.

The story continues overseas with visits to the former Soviet Union, India, South Africa and the USA. In Europe, we visit a tiny backwater of English narrow gauge plus railways in France and Greece and then onto the remarkable Harz system in Germany and a scenic trip through Switzerland.

Finally, we visit rack railways in Wales, Switzerland, Austra, India and Spain.
