Norwich. The loco hauled capital of the network with Class 37s & 90s plus Class 86s in the 1980s.


The Wherry Lines. The final summer of Class 37s on the ‘Short Set’, with 37 419, 37 716, 37 405, 37 407 and 37 424 at a number of locations plus a look back to the 47 hauled ‘drags’ on Liverpool Street services.


The Cromer & Sheringham Branch. The 1990s with Class 31s and 37s on Freight, Metro Cammel DMUs and the last summer of 2nd Generation DMU operation.

A Journey along the branch line of the former Somerset & Dorset Railway from Evercreech Junction to Burnham on Sea

Starting at Evercreech Junction, each of the intermediate stations and halts are featured on the journey to Glastonbury and across the Somerset Levels to Highbridge and to Burnham on Sea. Then follows the return journey from Highbridge. Holiday Traffic on the Wherry lines with Class 31s & 47s.


Kings Cross to the North from 1971 to 1980 following the electrification of the line to Hitchin starting in the days when semaphore signalling ruled. Deltics, Class 31s, Class 47s and DMUs are shown in the pre-TOPS era. The railway is then shown through the years including the introduction of the HSTs. A thorough portrait of a railway in transition.


Special Trains to Norfolk with the ‘Fenland Rambler’ of October 1967, the ‘East Anglian Branch Line Farewell’ of 1968 and a tour along the Joint Line to Spalding and then through to Ipswich & Lowestoft and Sheringham. The North Norfolk Railway is shown in its early years before the introduction of a passenger service. The ‘East Anglian Branch Line Farewell’ of September 1968 features a special along the Wisbech Branch on its last day of operation and then the run to Cromer. Finally the ‘Lenwade Railtour’ is featured on the run along the freight only branch from Wroxham to Lenwade in 1972.

The Pick Up Freight train, winding a leisurely course along the branch line railway disappeared from the network in the 1960s.

In this volume we take a journey with the crew on a service from Dereham to Fakenham in Norfolk. On the way we explore the railway, the stations and watch shunting operations on this delightful by-way in 1968.

Haulage is in the form of the BrushType 2, later to become known as the Class 31s. ‘Pick Up Freight’ provides a unique record of a long lost aspect of railway operation, as well as looking at the history of the railway to the coast at Wells.
