JT1 takes in the highlights of two days at Würzburg, a delightful medieval city in Bavaria where two major routes cross: from Vienna via Regensburg and from Italy via Munich - both to the northern ports and Scandinavia through Kassel. These routes are highly competitive so you will see many locomotives operated under open access regulations -very colourful. Our second location is Ingolstadt, at the southern end of Die Bahn's most recently completed NBS. The city is the home of Audi cars and a lot of rail-freight! At both locations wagonload traffic is heavy- the stock formations and the loads varied - inspiration for modellers perhaps? Passenger traffic is not forgotten, as well as the usual ICE and EC varieties you can see the new 200kph REGIO sets used on the Ingolstadt to Nürnburg Neubaustrecke. [57-mins]

Just Trains is a format of rail film made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. The films are not narrated but are fully captioned and location maps are provided where applicable. Salzburg is Austria’s fourth largest city and the capital of the county of Salzburg. It lies 300km west of the capital Vienna and 160km south of Munich. The main station, Hbf, is located east of the river, the Salzach, and is connected to the city by a trolleybus network. The 1860 built station is currently being completely rebuilt in a project that is due to last until 2014. The through lines are on either edge of the station. On the southern side there are two double track bays used by services to Germany – the German side. OBB trains, including ICs, terminating or reversing in Salzburg, use the bays to the north. We also visit Salzburg Taxham Europark a new station built between the rivers Salzach and Saalach, and Gnigl which is east of the city and the site of one of Austria’s largest classification yards. During our visit the Brenner Railway was closed so freight traffic was manic! Filmed in HD and captioned

Just Trains is made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. The films are not narrated but are captioned and location maps are provided. Bologna is the capital and largest city in the Region of Emilia-Romagna. It has a population of nearly 400,000 and is situated on the edge of the Po Plain at the foot of the Apennine Mountains. Bologna station, Bologna Centrale, was built in 1864. It has changed little since then but a new station on two levels is being constructed – a modern gateway to Italy’s sixth largest city. Bologna lies on the main line, now a ‘Directisima’ or NBS, between Milan and Rome. There are two lines converging from the north: One from Innsbruck – the Brenner via Verona - and from Klagenfurt via Venice and Padua. In addition to ETR500 trains from the state operator we see AGV high-speed train-sets “Italo” built by Alstom. These are operated by Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori or NTV. FS has been busy re-branding many fast services: Frecciabianca is a new category introduced by FS In December 2011. The passenger cars are the Grand Comfort stock of the late 1970s but heavily refurbished and repainted. Traction is from a fleet of refurbished E402B machines topped or tailed with a driving trailer. Medium distance local services utilise double deck EMUs from “TAF” which are also used by OAO Trenord on the Milan airport (Malpensa) shuttle.

Antwerp is a major gateway to the world for German industry, indeed it is oft referred to (tongue in cheek) as Germany’s second port! The border city of Aachen is the point where traffic flows from the Ruhr and the Rhine to the Belgian port(s) come together. Rail geography dictates that the larger, and most international, of these two flows (Cologne) must reverse in the city before going forward to Belgium.

We follow the activity at various locations in the city then follow the line west into Belgium (now the Montzen Line) to Visé where it crosses the Maas and the Albert Canal.

Highlights include a full load of Audi A3s from Brussels at Aachen, a 700m long train of FIAT 500s crossing the canal and a B-Logistics TRAXX with long wagonload on the Cologne south bridge filmed from the air.

Just Trains No. 11: Biblis and Mannheim - The Riedbahn

Just Trains No. 11: Biblis and Mannheim - The Riedbahn

Ref: FHJT011D

Price:£16.50

Quantity:

Biblis lies north of Mannheim on the Riedbahn the main railway between Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Basel. It’s a junction station – the original Riedbahn ran into Mannheim through Worms and Ludwigshafen – the Worms line enjoying a regular shuttle provided by DB Regio using new LINT units.

Frankfurt is the hub of the German high-speed train network and the Riedbahn is it’s busiest spoke. International trains in the form of TGV services from Paris to Frankfurt use this route, as do classic DB ICs. Amazingly with all this passenger train activity the Riedbahn sees as much freight as the two alternative routes south (Maiz to Worms and the Rhein-Neckarbahn via Darmstadt) together! (In part due to upgrading work near Weinheim on the Rhein-Neckarbahn).

We move on to approaches to Mannheim: Mannheim-Waldhof, where traffic divides for the Rbf and the Hbf (over a 1980’s NBS through the port area) and to the Rheine crossing between Worm / Ludwigshafen and Mannheim Hbf and onward to the Rbf.

We also discuss plans for a NEW Riedbahn being planned from the outskirts of Frankfurt to Mannheim-Waldhof that will extend 300kph running from Frankfurt to Stuttgart and facilitate more freight of the critical north-south axis.

Just Trains No. 12: The Bridge at Remagen Linz am Rhein Assmannshausen

Just Trains No. 12: The Bridge at Remagen Linz am Rhein Assmannshausen

Ref: FHJT012D

Price:£15.00

Quantity:

Before March 1945 there was a rail bridge over the Rhine south of Cologne and north of Koblenz – the Erich Ludendorff Brücke- better known by non-Germans as the bridge at Remagen. The battle that was fought for control of the bridge in May 1945 will be remembered as one of the greatest military successes of the American army. The bridge eventually collapsed (and was never rebuilt) but not before Allied troops had poured over the river with their equipment and established a solid bridgehead east of the Rhine. The major part of Just Trains 12 was filmed around the east bastion of the bridge – a poignant back drop to watch modern German trains hustle over the busy corridor that is the Rhine right bank railway. We also visit ‘picture postcard” Linz am Rhein, and further south Assmannshausen just before the mighty river leaves its gorge.
