Modern Traction Archive Vol.4 (??-mins)

Ref: LN114D

This programme contains material of classic modern diesel and electric traction at work in the UK during the 1980s and early 1990s. The DVD is ideal for modellers keen to witness historic liveries and train formations, or for those who just want to reminisce about days gone by. The original video material was filmed using broadcast cameras recording on to portable VHS equipment, as a result the picture quality is very good for the period and with modern digital editing, this programme represents material as close as you can get to the quality of the original.

West Coast Mainline hotspot: Stafford. Largo-logo class 47s, BR blue 20s, 85s, 86s and 87s all feature. Included is a rare shot of 45038 on passenger, also 37 428 on ballast and blue 47 471, 627 and 402. We also witness early intercity-liveried locos as well as blue/grey coaching stock in this nostalgic period beginning in 1985 and going through to 1988.

We see 45147 (the Manchester crash loco) on freight, class 33s on Portsmouth-Cardiff services and ballast trains from Meldon Quarry, 56116 hauling 47901, a class 205 'Thumper' Unit and 50017, 50019 and 50046. We also see 59003 - now resident in Germany , 31175. class 155 and 156 DMUs and plenty of class 56s and 47s, including 47063, 277, 295 and 705 - and not forgetting class 37s, including 37308 in original blue livery.

Thornaby: Situated at the entrance to Tees Yard, class 31s, 37s, 47s and class 60 are seen on a variety of freight services between 1987 and 1990. Highlights include, pairs of 31s on cement, large-logo 37408 and 37420, 37515 in railfreight red-stripe, 60008 on driver training duties and even a trainspotting dog - totally barking!

Modern Traction Archive Vol.9 - Warrington and Doncaster (70-mins)

Modern Traction Archive Vol.9 - Warrington and Doncaster (70-mins)

Ref: LN152D

are archive video material from two of the north’s most popular rail watching locations, from 1988 to 1992 where we see a variety of freight and passenger trains, involving locomotives and stock that are now, sadly, just part of history.

At Warrington we see and hear the distinctive sound of class 20s on coal and Speedlink freight trains, class 47s on coal, engineers, containers, chemical and parcels services; class 31s on local trip freights appear in all sorts of guises. The electrified side of things features classes 81, 85, 86 and 87 on various freight and passenger duties and even a rare shot of 89 001 on a test train hauling five of the then Derby-based International train coaches.

Over at Doncaster, we see two class 45/0s on freight, BR-blue liveried class 31s on passenger and freight, blue 56s on long trainloads of coal hoppers, split-box ‘tractors’ – again in blue, on speeedlink trip workings, green 20030 on a light engine move to and from Immingham and rather an oddly painted class 08 shunter going about its business.

The early days of class 91s are also witnessed as we see some of their first workings through this busy station – including one example on a train of blue/grey Mark 111 sleepers. Also seen are HSTs in their original colour scheme on ECML intercity services and a South Yorkshire PTE-liveried DMU, as well as a class 31/4 on passenger.

We witness class 47s in BR-blue and early railfreight colours going about their business, in this real blast from the past!

Modern Traction Archive Vol.33 - Gloucestershire

Modern Traction Archive Vol.33 - Gloucestershire

Ref: LN433D

This programme looks at the British Rail era of the early 1990s in the county of Gloucestershire. The main cross-country route linking The Midlands with Bristol and South Wales heads south through the county through the large town of Cheltenham and Gloucester. We have chosen a number of well-known photographic locations to view the activity including on stations with Cheltenham being the focal point. We also look at the line along the river Severn towards Chepstow - including a view of the Severn Bore - and south along the line through Standish Junction towards Cam. Filmed largely in 1993 and early 1994 a wide selection of motive power is seen including Classes 20, 31, 37, 43, 47, 50, 55, 56, 59, 60, 117, 150/1, 150/2, 156 and 158. Class 47s and Paxman-powered HSTs feature on Cross-Country passenger turns with parcels, china-clay, fertiliser, tanker trains, steel, car-component, engineers all making an appearance as we turn the clock back to a time when locomotives still dominated the rail network. Many different liveries are also seen, including BR-blue, railfreight grey, Parcels Red, Scotrail, EWS, Mainline Blue, Transrail, Regional Railways, Centro, Departmental and Virgin colours.
