European Railway Loco-Hauled 2011: France, Germany & Czech Republic (??-mins)

European Railway Loco-Hauled 2011: France, Germany & Czech Republic (??-mins)

Ref: LN180D

In this programme we travel to Germany, France and the Czech Republic as we witness a whole host of locomotive types still to be seen on current-day passenger workings. Some of these are modern designs, whilst others are on the endangered list and due for withdrawal over the coming months and years.

Our first section comes from France and the diesel operated mainline from Paris to Culmont-Chalindrey. This is the last mainline in France that is still not electrified. The mighty CC72100 are in charge of the passenger services.

We move to Germany as we look at a variety of electric locomotives at work around the country on local regional passenger duties. We see classes 111, 112, 143, 145, and 182 from locations such as Frankfurt, Cologne and Dresden.

The Czech Republic still uses locomotive and coach formations for the majority of their services. We take a ride from Dresden to Prague, witnessing Classes 163, 371, 350, 110 and 750 locos along the way.

The older electric types to be found in the south of France are rapidly fading away with withdrawals of the last remaining members now taking place. We focus on the BB9300 and the BB8500 electrics as they operate passenger services around Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Moving north-west in France, we find that the non-electrified line from Bordeaux to Nantes is still a favourite outpost for the class BB67400 diesels. We study the class working singly and in pairs on the Intercity trains that ply this route.

And finally in France, we look at some of the older electric locomotives at work in and around the Paris Suburbs, in particular the BB17000 whose life expectancy is now down to months, as new replacement suburban trains are rapidly introduced. We also look at some of the BB25500 heritage electrics working local trains around Rennes.

We relocate back to Germany to witness class 218 diesels at work around Frankfurt. This is followed by a look at the ever-diminishing numbers of class 110 electrics in operation, with a study of the passenger trains they work around Giessen.

The routes out to Westerland in the north of the country still feature class 218s on the main intercity services, we take a look at these as well as some of the local 218-operated trains out of Hamburg.

Finally, we travel to the Bad Harzburg line as we see class 218 diesels on local trains around this region. This section concludes with some superb on-train sequences where the locomotive sound can be distinctly heard – ok, they thrash a great deal!

IRELAND - we take a trip on an Irish Record Society Railtour on the 19th of July 2014. The tour features three separate class 071 diesels as we make the run from Dublin Connolly down to Waterford, then to Limerick and back to Dublin. Station run-rounds as well as on-board scenes from the train make this a very interesting excursion across the Emerald Isle.

POLAND - a look at traction around Warsaw followed by runs behind SU46 diesels on Summer trains south of Lublin as well as witnessing the final few weeks of the cross-border intercity trains around Forst.

CZECH REPUBLIC - a country which still sees the majority of its services hauled by locomotives. We base ourselves around Ostrava, where class 754 diesels dominate. Also included are classes 362, 151 and Polish freight locomotive ET41. We continue to the Breclav area where classes 1216, 363 and EU45 are all seen. Finally we head off to Karlovy Vary where class 363, 242 and 742 are witnessed on a variety of workings.

HUNGARY - during the summer of 2014 the country was a haven for haulage enthusiasts from all over Europe. Normally freight-only locomotives were at work on some passenger diagrams and it is one of these - in the shape of ‘Nohab’ class M61 loco, number 2761 017 - that we have a run behind from Tapolca to Budapest. GySEV are continuing to hire in class 232 diesels from DB: we take a run behind these monster locos in the west of the country.

GERMANY - We begin in Berlin where class 143s are seen on passenger duties, next we are off to the Itzehoe area north of Hamburg where ME26, 218 and 143s are seen on passenger duties - for the class 143s these were on services since taken over by a private operator. Class 218s are featured east of Hanover, whilst we see a class 111 at Mannheim.

SLOVAKIA - we focus on action around Zvolen where class 750, 754 and 757 diesels are seen in action with views from the stations and on board some of the trains: we also find class 240 & 242 on passenger duties - plus class 721 and 210.

CROATIA - plenty of thrash-action as we finish off our programme with runs behind class 2044 locos on passenger duties to the west of Zagreb. We also witness class 2132, 2062,1141 and 1142 - but it is the 2044s that are the stars of the show with their throaty exhausts!!!!

European Railway Dampfspektakel 2010

European Railway Dampfspektakel 2010

Ref: LN166D

It took 40 months to plan what was the biggest mainline steam event in Europe in recent history: the 175th anniversary of German Railways celebrations between 2 and 6 April, was as good as it gets. With no less than 17 mainline steam locomotives in action, this programme brings to you the lineside sounds and visions from some of the most powerful steam locomotives in the country. The event also marked the 20th year of Plandampfs in Germany and we bring you the action as it happened with specially chartered freight and passenger trains adding to the spectacle. On the locomotives side we include ‘Bt’ (Prussian T3), 01 1066, 01 118, 01 509, 23 042, T11 7512, P8 2455, 41 018, 41 360, 50 3610, 50 2740, 42 2718, 52 6106, 52 8134, 78 468 and 58 311 all in superb mainline action. As well as branchline action between Gerolstein and Ulmen we also have mainline steam running along the Mosel Valley and along the Saar Valley to Saarburg.

The programme is split into 5 sections with Day 1 beginning at Trier with highlights being the departure of 23 042 and 01 1066, we then move to the line east of Gerolstein where we see 52 6106 tackling the grade, followed by Prussian 7551 & 58 311 ‘top & tailing’ up the steep valley, before 52 8134 follows. The Ulmen branch is covered for the rest of the day before we head west to Densborn, where 23 042 arrives from Trier, and 78 468 makes a fine sight departing north for Gerolstein. Finally we close where we see 78 468 once again pulling out of Kyllburg.

Day 2 begins with early morning departures out of Trier including 01 118 on a spectacular departure for Saarbrucken. We continue with 42 2718 seen crossing over the Mosel River, and later 41 018, 50 3610 and 01 1066 appear on the line to Saarburg. We conclude with evening shots at Kordel, and at Ehrang where P8 2455, 23 042 and 01 509 are all seen.

Day 3 again begins at Trier with 23 042 and 41 360 on northbound departures; we travel to Wittlich where we catch 41 360 & 01 509 making spirited departures away in the early morning sun. At Bullay 50 3610 & 01 509 are seen in the Mosel Valley from high up above the town. We travel up to Cochem to see 01 118 depart north, before moving west to Daufenbach for P8 2455 to head south. Our final scenes are at Karthaus, where 42 2718, 01 509 and 41 360 are seen in quick succession.

Day 4 starts at Ehrang, where 23 042 makes a loud departure north for Gerolstein whilst 41 018 & 01 509 head trains through & on up the Mosel Valley. Steam departures are captured at Gerolstein where we follow the trains up the steep grades towards Ulmen. We break off to head to the mainline north of Gerolstein to capture 01 1066 on the 1:54 grade at Schmidtheim, working really hard. T

he final day is a Plandampf event & where we begin with an amazing arrival & departure of 52 8134 at Kyllburg on a frosty early morning – an amazing atmosphere where steam meets the cold air!! We move north to St.Thomas 78 468 leaves a fine smoke trail as it heads south towards Trier. Next, the line to Ulmen where we capture 50 2740 & 58 311 on chartered freight services. We also see 78 468 heading its first turn up to Ulmen before our final superb shot of 41 360 with black exhaust as it climbs up the summit at Schmidtheim.
