Tube Trains - but not to the Palace (45-mins)

Tube Trains - but not to the Palace (45-mins)

This dvd has gathered together all its material on the 'New Works plan of 1935' and included them here. In this plan a great many London suburban steam lines would be taken over by the then London Passenger Transport Board and incorporated in Tube lines. But the Second World War intervened and much of the works were cancelled. Using films from leading film makers of the day, these works are examines both then and now. Take Highgate High Level station, itself in a deep cutting below the Archway in North London. Rebuilt about 1938/39 it still hasn't received a passenget tube train. A few steam trains appeared from Alexandra Palace but these stopped in 1954. We see the last steam workings from Moorgate to Finsbury Park. Trains were supposed to reach Bushey, north of Edware, but just arches were built. The great car sheds at Aldenham were partially finsihed but then went into war work. later they were a bus overhaul works and we see them finally being demolished. Underground trains from Moorgate via Drayton Park were supposed to go to Finsbury park onto Highgate and the Palace but this never happened. A great many miles of cables and conductor rails were laid but taken up again. 1938 stock trains had to be hauled by battery locos from Drayton Park to Highgate and on to Golders Green or Acton for overhaul. Today you can walk the line to Highgate. In 1962 a large study was made of the abandoned line to the Palace; here were burnt out signalboxes, platforms, huts and at the Palace car auctions took place in the former coal yard. We take a brief look at the Central Line scheme where progress was made after the war and tube trains reached Woodford soon after. The Northern Line plans were quietly dropped partly due to the new "Green Belt" policy. Highgate High level still invites interest and can be seen today.

Ian's Note:- There is also a book related to all this called "By Tube Beyond Edgware" by Tony Beard. It was published in 2002 by "Capital Transport". ISBN 1-85414-246-1. I have this book & it is very interesting and recommended. However I don't know whether it is still in print as I bought it from one of those "remaindered" bookshops in 2009.
