It wasnt long ago that Coal was King. In the early 1980s the industry comprised a workforce of 150,000 in some 150 pits. Go back further to its heyday and coal was the dominant industry and one that underpinned the UKs status of a major industrial power. Coal was the lifeblood of a railway network which moved it from colliery to towns, cities, ports and industrial centres. In this DVD we’ll chart the life and times of King Coal and its movement by Rail .

WHEN COAL WAS KING - The 1930s.

THE POST WAR YEARS - The period from 1947, with new coal wagons and various Industrial steam railways operated by the National Coal Board. Diesel shunters were the unsung heroes of the traction fleet. Several classes, some large, some very small, toiled away in yards throughout the network. Some types were built in large numbers, like the 350 horsepower 08s. Others were grouped into smaller classes, like the 06s, which had short working lives. Others performed a wider variety of roles, working trip freight as well as heavier shunting duties. In this programme we explore this fleet in action, using a collection of archive film and contemporary footage.

The programme includes:

A history of the diesel shunter fleet starting in the 1930s.

Class 02 - an 0-4-0 design introduced in 1960.

Class 03 - an 0-6-0 diesel mechanical design, following the introduction of the class, with film from their early years around the network including East Anglia, the Cromford & High Peak and the Weymouth Tramway plus examples in preservation and in Industrial service.

Class 04 - an 0-6-0 diesel mechanical design with film from the 1960s and examples in preservation.

Class 06 - a diminutive 0-4-0 class of 16 with archive film from the 1960s.

Class 07 - A Southern Region based class used for shunting & trip freight.

Class 08 - the most numerous class of British diesel locomotive. The design is explored using archive film from the 1950s to the present day. The early locos produced in 1952 are featured along with the later examples introduced in the 1960s.

Class 09 - the 1960s built locos plus the conversions from 08s in the early 1990s.

Class 14 - the short lived ‘Teddy Bears’ built at Swindon in BR service and in the preservation era.

Class 17 - the Clayton Type 1s produced mostly for short distance freight.

St Pancras to Leicester in the 1980s

The Midland provided a fascinating mix of contrasts in the 1980s. While the line from St Pancras to Bedford was electrified, the section through Wellingborough to Leicester had changed relatively little since the days of steam. In this programme we take a ride in the cab of an HST and on the way explore the railway, its traffic, stations and structures.

The programme comprises:

A Cab Ride from St Pancras to Leicester in the cab of an HST in the summer of 1987. Includes scenes at St Pancras and the line through the London suburbs in the 1980s and the 1970s.

The journey from Bedford over the summit at Sharnbrook and down the grade through Irchester to Wellingborough.

The semaphore signalling at Wellingborough with views of the Signal Box and yards and signalling at Finedon Road.

Steam and diesel traction in and around Wellingborough and Kettering in the early 1960s.

The journey through Market Harborough to Leicester and the junctions at Glendon and Wigston.

1968 saw the end of a century-and-a-half of our main-line steam railways.

It started with just over 350 steam locomotives in service. Nearly all of the steam working was on freight traffic and some spectacular sights were still to be seen. As the year progressed, withdrawals continued and the remaining sheds were closed – or closed to steam at least.

Steam’s approaching demise was marked by a number of special trains, mostly organised by various enthusiast societies but one or two by BR as well. Right at the end, the 4th of August saw six railtours running in the Manchester and Preston divisional areas – and a week later, the very last train, the ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ from Liverpool to Carlisle and back.

In this volume we celebrate some of the sights and events of that momentous year.

It comprises:

Steam in Action in 1968 including the Peak District and in and around Stockport, Bolton and the West Coast Main Line, Rose Grove the climb to Copy Pit.

The Last Steam Sheds - Stockport, Patricroft, 10D Lostock Hall, Heaton Mersey, 10F Rose Grove & 10A Carnforth.

The Final Railtours. LCGB Lancastrian, the North West Tour, the Last Day of Steam Railtour and the Fifteen Guinea Special of the 11th August 1968.

After the End. 4472 ‘Flying Scotsman’ on tour around the country. Carnforth Shed in the first months of preservation.
