The eighth volume in our popular “Miscellany” series to cover London Midland steam compiled from mostly unseen footage from a variety of different cameramen and in the order the film runs off the original cine reels. Here we feature Midland 2Fs, the GCR in LMR days, in & around Manchester, the WCML and The North-West.

The line between Desford Junction and Leicester West Bridge had restricted clearances and was the last home of the diminutive Johnsons 2Fs which had been introduced as far back as the 1870s! We visit the line during February 1963 with snow still on the ground.

Next, in LMR days, we make a journey along the Great Central main line from Marylebone which includes Aylesbury, Brackley, Banbury, Woodford Halse, Rugby, Lutterworth, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham, Chesterfield and Hasland shed. We even feature a 1962 journey behind a 9F in normal passenger service from Brackley to Aylesbury!

On to the North-West and the Manchester area where a famous steam working in 1964 and 1965 was the evening commuter service from Manchester Central to Buxton. This working is forever associated with 'Jubilee' No. 45705 “Seahorse” and we cover the journey in some detail. Following on from this, there is excellent footage around New Mills Junction, Gowhole Yards, Chinley, the Romiley and Marple area, Hayfield, Stockport, Stockport Edgeley shed, plus Manchester Victoria and Exchange.

Shrewsbury and Ruabon are visited next and time is spent at Rossett (between Chester and Wrexham) and Talacre plus Worleston on the North Wales coast line.

Finally, numerous locations are visited on the northern part of the West Coast Main Line starting at Crewe and Crewe South shed, Acton Grange, Winwick Junction, Wigan, Lostock Hall shed, Farrington, Preston, Carnforth shed, and Shap. Other locations include near Ormskirk and Hellifield, plus shed visits to Rose Grove, Bolton, Holbeck, and Normanton.

The time period for the majority of the film is from 1962 to 1968. Motive power includes BR standard Britannia pacifics, Standard Class 5 & 4 4-6-0s, Class 2 2-6-0s, 9F 2-10-0s and Austerity 2-8-0s, ex-LMS Black 5s, 8Fs, 4Fs, 2-6-4Ts, Royal Scots, Jubilees, Stanier 2-6-0s, Ivatt tanks and Class 2 & 4 2-6-0s, ex-MR 2Fs, and Jinties.

An authentic sound track has been added along with an informative commentary to complement this nostalgic look at the last years of London Midland steam.

Alan Gilbert was a Mancunian through-and-through and a lifelong railway enthusiast. A member of the Manchester Locomotive Society since 1945 he became their Treasurer in 1955, a job he carried out for the next fifty-one years. Alan joined the newly formed Granada Television in the late fifties and progressed to a position of Chief Accountant from which he retired in 1988. He was President of the MLS at the time of his death in 2014, having been instrumental in guiding the organisation in so many ways over many years.

He put his filming skills to great use in pursuing his hobby of recording the railways of his home city and many other parts of the British Railways system in the mid 1950s when change was afoot and much-loved parts of the system and their associated locomotives and rolling stock were under threat. The two programmes that have now been released using this footage provide an important visual and historical archive of our railways at that time of change.

Often in the company of his friends W A "Cam" Camwell and Neville Knight, Alan Gilbert shot all his footage on 16mm film, between 1955 and 1958 and these two programmes show a great variety of trains and stations around Manchester as well as selected views across the country. Manchester London Road provides the dividing line between the two volumes, lines which head, roughly, south and west of this line form Volume 1 and those lines to the north and east thereof the second volume. Each takes a geographical tour around the country, starting at Manchester London Road.

Steam South and West of Manchester

A "Royal Scot" bursting out of Manchester London Road provides the opening scene as we trace the LNWR Main Line to Crewe seeing most of the stations thereon and featuring various ex-LMS locomotives and a bewildering variety of coaching stock, with old wooden-bodied LNWR coaches taking the limelight - even including the LNWR/LMS Royal Train! We also see the Styal line which includes a "Princess" on a three-coach train.

We follow the LNWR once again on the line to Macclesfield and then the "alternative" North Stafford or "Knotty" main line down towards Stoke-on-Trent and its surrounding area. Diversions via Cheadle take us over the CLC (and we even see one of the famous ICI Hopper trains) and through to the MSJ & A and Brooklands.

We then set off to the West via the Severn Valley line and its branches through Tenbury Wells and Much Wenlock. The Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railway is then taken before we go to the Cambrian Main Line and branches and Oswestry.

Once in Wales we visit lines around Wrexham and Chester and go up into the Wirral before visiting the Llandudno and Colwyn Bay Electric Railway and Denbigh station including views of its loco shed. Next come lines radiating from Bangor and we cross to Anglesey and then into Snowdonia where we visit long-lost lines such as the Nantlle Railway with its horse-drawn wagons.

A brief visit to the Vale of Rheidol behind a BR black liveried No: 8 takes us to the south of Wales where we start at Abergavenny with the last train over the Heads of the Valley line; other locations include the many stations of Dowlais, Tondu and a classic "coal valley" to Abergwynfi. In the south west of Wales we go to the lines around Pembroke and Fishguard and then cross to south west England following the ex-LSWR West of England Main Line and its branches from Yeovil to Exmouth and then Wadebridge and Padstow.

Finally we visit Great Western lines in Cornwall, seeing locomotives ranging from “Pannier” tanks to “Halls” on lines such as the Looe branch, Perranporth, Helston and St Ives. We finish, appropriately, as far south and west as we can get from Manchester, at Penzance.

Volume Two - Steam north and east of Manchester

Setting off from Manchester London Road this volume takes us onto the mainly Great Central lines which run into the south-eastern suburbs of the city, where the charismatic "Atlantic" and "Pacific" tanks were still in use in the mid-1950s. We visit Reddish, Marple, Hayfield and go over to Glossop and many other places seeing steam and electric traction on the line to Woodhead before witnessing some Midland diversions via Teviot Dale.

On "real" Midland metals we follow the main line out through Hazel Grove, New Mills and Chinley and then visit the Millers Dale to Buxton line with Johnson and Stanier 0-4-4 tanks. We briefly go to Hartington and Parsley Hay before taking the LNWR line back into Manchester via Dove Holes, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge, seeing a Super D and plenty of 8Fs on heavy freights - and one extremely short one!

Crossing to the northern suburbs we traverse the Bury to Rawtenstall line (today's East Lancashire Railway) from the terminus at Bacup to Ramsbottom. Staying with the original East Lancashire Railway we go to Liverpool via Ormskirk to see the famous Liverpool Overhead Railway - on Grand National Day! From there we cross the waters to the Isle of Man where trains still ran to Peel. Returning to the mainland and Bury we follow the line through Heywood and down to Miles Platting, reversing there and taking the Oldham Loop. A short ride on a WD hauled freight to Facit precedes a visit to the Delph line and then we see a special at Diggle.

Quick visits to Grassington and Keighley as well as Ingrow West allow us to climb over the hills towards Bradford at Great Horton and Great Northern lines around Wakefield before we go right across country to the Hull area where we visit Market Weighton, Hornsea and Withernsea with plenty of North Eastern infrastructure in evidence.

Staying in North Eastern territory we go to Saltburn and Hartlepool before crossing the Tyne to visit Blythe and district. Alternative ways into Scotland are explored at Carlisle and Stranraer but we enter by way of Reedsmouth Junction, Kelso and St Boswells before taking the low road (or is it the high road) up through Tyndrum to the twin lines to Oban and Fort William in the West Highlands, ending our tour at The Mound on the Far North line.

Long before the invention of YouTube and smartphones, Video 125 cameras were out and about filming the London Underground for our Driver’s eye view videos.

Although mainly filmed in standard definition, the sound was a different matter.

100% of the time we were using full broadcast television standard microphones and recording equipment. This means that long-since scrapped 1959, 1962 and 1967 tube stock on the Central, Northern and Victoria lines can still be heard in full stereo sound. The long-since scrapped A, C and D sub-surface stock on the Hammersmith & City, Circle, District and Metropolitan, lines also heavily feature in this unique video production filmed between 1988 and 2014.

Not only can you relive the nostalgic sounds but you will also see the video footage too! Unpainted aluminium and mid-life refurbished stock as well as trains still in service in 2020. There are even a couple of surprises, such as the 1938 tube stock filmed on the Isle of Wight.

Many shots have not been seen or heard since the day they were filmed. Others that were used in Driver’s eye views are now shown in their entirety, rather than being edited. Some shots linger long, to provide the unique atmosphere of the London Underground.
