Price:£24.95 (including VAT at 20% for customers in the UK & EU)
Price: £20.79 excluding VAT (for customers in non-EU countries e.g.Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada)

Double disk set. Deshler is located in Northwestern Ohio on the busy east-west CSX mainline to Chicago from the east. This is former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad trackage, and includes a diamond where the double-track east-west line crosses the Toledo Subdivision which runs north-south from Cincinnati to Toledo. The abandoned passenger depot and tower, form nice backdrops at the diamond where most trains are seen during the day. Other trains take one of three connections changing directions in the process. We visit more than 11 different days between 2006 and 2009. Disc one has 2006-2007 which contains more lease units plus of course plenty of CSX, and other railroads like Union Pacific, and BNSF. In disc two among other things you will see two winter visits with some snow and ice during the shooting in Deshler. Most trains are identified, and the direction and times of day are provided with each scene on the screen. There are a great number of different types of trains and motive power. Over 120 trains are shown on the two dvd set.

You will also see some of the gatherings at Crossroads Park including 2 different cook-outs and of course loads of trains passing. On the Toledo Sub near Deshler we see color position signals which harken back to the days of the B&O. There is also a retention pond which is seen with trains reflecting and passing in all sorts of weather. There is something for everyone in this production.

This video has been years in the making, as we have attempted to accumulate enough footage to justify such a release. We have 8mm footage by Warren Scholl, shot in 1954, but the majority of footage is 16mm color footage, including a good amount by Perry Becker who made more than one trip to the area. Locations shown are North Platte, Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, and of course action on Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie. You will see interesting things such as a "Big Boy" number 4006 on fire as it exits Hermosa Tunnel, with its stack hood still on as well. Also see a Gas Turbine leading a Big Boy in 3 different scenes. You will see the engine service areas in the locations mentioned above, and see some of the dead engine lines late in the steam era. This footage is all shot silent of course, and we have added music and informative narration. However, we do have another segment with some 16mm sound footage on Sherman Hill which includes several doubleheaders, such as 5500 series 2-10-2's with Challengers and Big Boys. There are also a couple of Big Boy scenes by Everett Rohrer, and some film he shot of the first test run, and first excursions in 1982 when Challenger 3985 first operated. So, for all those lovers of BIG BOYS, and big articulated steam Giants this one is for you

Colorado and Southern Steam (95 mins)

Colorado and Southern Steam (95 mins)

Ref: GS170D

Price:£24.95 (including VAT at 20% for customers in the UK & EU)
Price: £20.79 excluding VAT (for customers in non-EU countries e.g.Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada)

The Colorado and Southern was a regional class 1 railroad which was a subsidiary of the Burlington Route (CB&Q Railroad), and mainly operated from Guernsey, Wyoming south through Denver, Colorado Springs, Trinidad, and connected with the Fort Worth & Denver (also a CB&Q Subsidiary) in northern Texas.

Our coverage begins in the mid-1950's and comprises 8mm color footage shot by an unknown photographer who must have lived in either Colorado or Wyoming.

Through area enthusiasts we have determined most of the locations and interesting information about what is seen in the films. There is 2-8-0 action switching in Denver as well as fantrips and other areas where engines worked on branch lines and other terminals such as Trinidad and Fort Collins. One of the neat things shown is a fantrip which was a charter by well-known enthusiast and author Jim Ehrenberger, who sponsored a trip from Cheyenne to Guernsey, WY with 2-10-2 number 900 in July of 1959. Jim recently did an article on this trip in Classic Trains Spring 2010. There was only one more fantrip with 900 after this one, and this was the last steam on this route north of Cheyenne. Only 27 people were on the trip, and we see footage from one of them. Another interesting segment is two separate visits to Leadville to see this region. The first is a brief one during the winter and shows a few scenes of engine 638. This engine was later sent to Denver to be shopped and ran excursions, becoming the last active C&S steamer in December 1962. It's replacement 641 is also seen on a second visit switching cars. 641 was also seen in regular work at places like Denver before this in some of the films. 641 at Leadville became the last steam locomotive to operate for a class 1 standard gauge railroad in the United States.

The 8mm film comprises approximately 65% of the program, and rest is 16mm footage shot by Everett Rohrer which was a complete reel of C&S steam. There is lots of switching action especially around Denver and vicinity, and includes some of the 2-8-2's, that came from the Burlington. In fact there are two different groups shown, the 4994 for example, and the others that were renumber 806,807,809, etc. In addition to this switching service both groups of films include lots of fantrip action, including some of the last engines that operated for the C&S.

As an addition to the Cheyenne material we also have shots of a train that was diesel powered, but had a 2-10-2 helper on the rear with 903. This was shot by Alan Pommer.

There is background information on most of the engines shown, which includes builder dates, and scrapping dates of each engine. As with most films like these there is no train sounds, so we have plenty of interesting narration, and background music to accompany the films. Old film footage like this doesn't grow on trees and we are happy to offer steam footage from over 50 years ago from a class 1 railroad that was the last standard gauge steam in Colorado.

SP&S 700 Washington Steamfest (90 mins)

SP&S 700 Washington Steamfest (90 mins)

SP&S 700 was rebuilt in Portland and this trip in October of 1990 was its first major outing, and perhaps one of its best since its restoration. The event was the Washington Steamfest in Yakima, on the Washington Central, which has since been sold back to BNSF. This run included Portland to Pasco on the former SP&S trackage that 700 was built for, and then onto former Northern Pacific trackage to Prosser, Yakima, Ellensburg, and Cle Elum. The scenic Columbia Gorge and Yakima River Canyons form superb backgrounds for this lovely 4-8-4. There were three of these engines built to the NP 4-8-4 design and 700 is the sole survivor. In addition to the 700 we will also see Great Western 2-8-0 Number 51 running short trips and even meeting 700 at one location. 700 operated on short trips, dinner trains, and one-way trips that eventually took it back to Portland after the Steamfest was concluded. No diesel helpers on these trips, just 700 doing all the work. When this video was originally released it was 60 minutes. We re-edited the video recently for the dvd and now its 90 minutes. This is a companion video to the SP 4449 Washington Steamfest. After 4449 ran trips in and around Yakima 700 made an encore performance on its first big outing. Don't miss this great steam action.
