Steam officially retired from daily use in England on 11th.August 1968, but thanks to the efforts of a dedicated band of enthusiasts who during the 1950s and 1960s set out to record this fascinating part of everyday life, it is still possible yo enjoy the sights and sounds of British steam at work.

This special production features a selection of the most interesting lines from all around the old British railways network including:

• The Waverley Route:- passenger and freight trains on this scenic cross border route to Scotland that enjoyed its heyday in the 1950s.

• The North East:- some of the last steam hauled coal trains around the Sunderland area.

• Worcester to Paddington:- join the crew of a Castle Class 4-6-0 as they work an express paseenger train to London.

• The Somerset & Dorset:- a chance to revisit (possibly) the most famous closed line of them all!

• The North West:- splendid main line action through the beautiful Westmorland countryside, including banking over Shap Summit.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the BBC broadcast a series of television programmes called Railway Roundabout, featuring train lines which proved to be on the point of closure and locomotives that were about to disappear forever.

This archive film footage has been transformed by Ian Allan and is now available as eight separate Railway Roundabout DVDs, all superbly recreating the lost age of steam!

Highlights of this fascinating DVD include views of the 'Bristolian' in the days of steam and trains in action on the Lickey incline.

We then go on a journey to Ireland to see the Irish narrow gauge in all its glory, then back to Southampton harbour for more steam scenes.

The Hayling Island branch is also included as is the Cardigan branch.

Finally we hop on board the very last train from Abergavenny to Merthyr.
